We are accepting applications to fill one (1) Pharmacist extra help position in Santa Barbara for the Behavioral Wellness Department's Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF).
THE POSITION: Under direction, to compound and dispense pharmaceutical drugs and prescriptions, keep records of drugs, poisons, and narcotics as required by Federal and State law, and to do related work as required. This position is required to report onsite.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is an entry-level class and is distinguished from Pharmacist Supervising in that the latter is responsible for planning and directing the work of a pharmacy and for providing countywide pharmaceutical services.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The County of Santa Barbara's Department of Behavioral Wellness isresponsible for ensuring the provision of mental health services mandated by the State of California for children with serious emotional disturbance, adults with serious mental illness, and all Medi-Cal beneficiaries with specialty mental health needs. Behavioral Wellness also provides substance use disorder treatment services for Medi-Cal beneficiaries. Our Mission is to promote the prevention of and recovery from mental illness and addiction among individuals; families and communities by providing effective leadership and delivering state-of-the-art, culturally competent services that are guided by measurable client-specific outcomes. Behavioral Wellness annually provides treatment, rehabilitation and support services to approximately 9,800 clients (3,000 children/adolescents and 6,900 adults) with mental illness and 4,500 clients with substance use disorders. The Ideal candidate will have:
- Service oriented mindset and work ethic, and excellent time management skills.
- Ability to adapt to change, prioritize workflow, and work under minimal supervision.
- Comprehensive knowledge of psychopharmacology, and its applications to behavioral disorders and pathologies.
- Proficiency in comprehending patient medical management plans, extracting pertinent information from patient and/or patient records, and provide recommendations to meet the therapeutic needs of the patient.
- Knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, and standards in relation to a pharmacy operation to ensure compliance, and advocate for and deliver optimal patient care delivery and safety based on data-driven decisions.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with other members of the interdisciplinary team including, but not limited to, physicians, nurses, and case managers.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Minimum of 1-year work experience with the direct care of patients with behavioral disorders in an acute setting, and with the use of an Automated Dispensing Cabinet and pharmaceutical inventory management.
- Compounds, prepares, mixes, manufactures and dispenses medicines and preparations for scientific and technical use; prepares special and individual prescriptions; assists in the custody and dispensing of narcotics, hypnotics, alcohol and poisons; labels and prices stock and keeps stock in orderly arrangement.
- Reviews patient charts, medication orders, and medication regimens for completeness and appropriateness (including, but not limited to, disease state, dosage, route of administration, drug compatibilities, contraindications, etc.) to assure optimal patient care and consults with the prescriber directly when necessary;
- Recommendations including, but not limited to, pharmaceutical interventions and lab monitoring parameters to physicians, nurses, and patients.
- Available to answer questions, and provides accurate and up-to-date pharmaceutical information for physicians, nurses, and patients.
- Participates in treatment team meetings with the patients.
- Procures pharmaceuticals and supplies to manage the inventory of the hospital pharmacy, and ensures proper drug storage.
- Monitors, repackages, and dispenses pharmaceuticals and supplies to maintain medication storage room inventory to meet the needs of the patients at the Psychiatric Health Facility.
- Performs monthly unit inspection for proper storage of medication and supplies and removes outdated pharmaceuticals and supplies.
- Receives, dispenses, and keeps accurate record of all controlled substances activities, and immediately reports any discrepancies to the supervisor.
- Maintains and organizes the record keeping including, but not limited to, pharmaceutical invoices and medication orders.
- Supervises the work of Pharmacy Technicians as required.
- Assures that all PHF and regulatory requirements are met regarding medication operations and documentation.
- Provides medication consultation at patient bedside for discharge.
- Documents and records all clinically-significant drug reactions; reports adverse drug reactions.
- Responsible for the activities of the hospital pharmacy in the absence of a Pharmacist-In-Charge.
- Participates in department quality assurance activities, complies with state and federal rules and regulations, and identifies and reports any pertinent findings to supervisor including, but not limited to, medication errors and proper drug storage.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards

Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Pharmacist issued by the State of California.
Additional Qualification: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required.
Knowledge of: the compounding of prescriptions and stock pharmaceutical preparations; drugs, chemicals, and pharmaceutical supplies required in the operation of a pharmacy; state laws pertaining to the dispensing and use of narcotics and poisons.
Ability to: compound a wide variety of drugs and medicines and maintain records.
