Overview

The Pharmacy Technician III performs both baseline duties (including those of a Pharmacy Technician II) as well as specialized technician duties as determined by departmental leadership. Able to train new pharmacy technicians. Competent to staff in at least two specialized areas/locations as determined by departmental leadership.

Location: Suburban Johns Hopkins Hospital located in Bethesda, MD is now hiring pharmacy technician's level III. 

Schedule:

  • 1:30pm to 10pm (with the possibility of rotating to day shifts). 
Responsibilities
  • Accurately stages medications for dose preparation. Fills new drug orders prior to pharmacist final check. Fills medication carts prior to pharmacist final check. If assigned by departmental leadership, may prepare injectable, chemotherapy, or other specialty medications according to established procedures prior to pharmacist final check. Uses proper techniques to prepare sterile and non-sterile compounds for general and specialized areas as determined by departmental leadership. Labels container/packages prior to pharmacist verification. Initials product labels according to area policy. Completes all required documentation for record keeping. Willingly provides appropriate constructive feedback to others on medication dose preparation activities.
  • Delivers medications to patient care areas according to procedures, within scheduled time frames and/or follows pneumatic tube procedures. Ensures that both hazardous drugs and controlled substances are handled per departmental policy. Helps identify and eliminate sources of medication waste. Returns doses appropriately. Recycles unused doses according to policy. Follows departmental policy when delivering controlled substances. Stores medications in appropriate location on the nursing unit. Routinely monitors medication rooms on the assigned delivery route to ensure their organization and cleanliness. Serves as an ambassador for the Department of Pharmacy when making deliveries by being courteous and approachable.
  • Performs routine inventory counts of medications, checks expiration dates, and removes all expired or recalled medications for disposal according to departmental policy, including specialized areas as assigned by departmental leadership. Unpacks, stores, rotates, and restocks medications and supplies. Replaces nursing unit medications accurately according to established schedules and procedures. Ensures that products are stored according to area policy. May assist the inventory specialist as needed in the ordering process or as assigned by departmental leadership.
  • Maintains a safe, orderly, and clean work environment. Contacts Environmental Services as needed. Checks nursing unit/clinic storage areas per assignment and established departmental policies.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment as assigned by departmental leadership. Documents cleaning per area policy. Follows manufacturer's guidelines when trouble-shooting, maintaining, and repairing automated systems used by the pharmacy in the preparation and dispensing of medications. Arranges for repairs of equipment as directed by supervisor. Knows the appropriate people to contact in the event of an equipment malfunction or alerts and when to contact them. Ensures proper maintenance, including temperature monitoring, and cleanliness of refrigerators. Perform required monitoring and documentation of equipment maintenance as required by departmental policy and regulations. Able to troubleshoot minor Pyxis MedStation and other technology/ automation equipment issues without assistance, e.g., changing printer paper, recovering failed drawers, swapping out cubies.
  • Identifies and prioritizes activities that must be completed to meet area responsibilities, based on established task assignments and standards. Make recommendations to adjust work schedule as needed to ensure area responsibilities are completed, including during weather emergencies or other special circumstances. Timely communication of information during shift-change and hand-off periods. Complies with hospital and department policies relative to work and meal breaks.
  • Follows all departmental and institutional policies. Documents all work activities as required. Assists the leadership team in carrying out newly implemented departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrates competency with automated systems, including, but not limited to: pneumatic tube, fax machine, Epic printers, Pyxis MedStations, carrousels, etc. Identifies when supervisor should be contacted to prevent problems from escalating unnecessarily. Assist leadership team in developing new and/or carrying out newly implemented departmental policies and procedures. May be required to assist the leadership team with projects to improve the efficiency of current workflow. Reads e-mail at least daily when at work to stay abreast of important changes and information. Provides feedback to pharmacy leadership team around policies and procedures.
  • Answers telephones or responds to staff at the window appropriately by following good customer service techniques. Provides basic information in response to inquiries concerning medications, e.g., items in stock, missing dose requests. Demonstrates a high level of proficiency in dealing with and troubleshooting missing dose inquiries. Follows up/takes ownership to bring the matter to a successful
  • Participates in departmental educational efforts. Maintains required certifications and training. Participates actively in the orientation and training of new personnel, trainees and learners in specialized areas as assigned by departmental leadership.
  • Reports medication errors and potential errors. Meticulously checks accuracy of work. Contributes to pharmacy safety rounds.
  • Demonstrates initiative to accept other duties and responsibilities willingly as the needs arise.
  • Acts as a resource and trainer for junior staff.
  • May assume the role as a charge Pharmacy Technician in the absence of Pharmacy Technician supervisor.
  • Helps develop deliver training materials.
  • Completes assigned projects and process improvement as needed.
  • Master the skills and knowledge required for pharmacy research.
  • Master the skills and knowledge necessary to mix intravenous hazardous medications.
  • Master the skills and knowledge necessary for obtaining Medication History.
  • Master the skills and knowledge necessary for Technician Product Verification as acceptable by each regulatory jurisdiction. Not currently acceptable in DC.
Qualifications
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a pharmacy technician training program is preferred.

  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Pharmacy for Maryland or the District of Columbia Board of Pharmacy for DC as a Pharmacy Technician. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certified required. Additional Certification(s) may also be required depending upon the needs and activities of the assigned department/division. PTCB for pharmacy students can be waived for those who have an active Pharmacist Intern License.
  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Pharmacy for Maryland or the District of Columbia Board of Pharmacy for DC as a Pharmacy Technician. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certified required. Additional Certification(s) may also be required depending upon the needs and activities of the assigned department/division.
