Senior RF Engineer

NAL Research Corporation, located in Manassas, VA, provides military-grade Iridium satellite modems and tracking terminals and secure geolocation solutions for the defense, research, and commercial sectors. These products are used globally in a wide range of applications including asset tracking, search and rescue, remote sensing, and command/control for personnel, land, maritime, and airborne platforms.

NAL is seeking a senior RF engineer for a full time position in our Hardware Engineering group located in Manassas, VA. The successful candidate will work with a talented electrical design team, and work closely with systems engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, embedded software engineers, and project management to design satellite communication and GPS tracking electronics that meet customer requirements and internal work standards. The candidate will also help shape our Assured PNT and SDR-based product designs, leading or participating in the requirement, planning, development, and production phases of these projects.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Design PCBs using Altium Designer, including schematic capture, layout, BoMs, DVT, and DFM, with emphasis on RF signal routing and EMI/EMC
  • Design suitable RF front ends and custom antenna solutions for handheld devices.
  • Characterize performance of new designs; power management, communication performance, and RF performance are of particular interest.
  • Specify RF transceivers, software defined radios, antennas, tuners, power amplifiers, filters, connectors and shielding based on design requirements.
  • Research viable COTS antennas for new products, and test, analyze and integrate antennas into products.
  • Characterize RF performance using RF test equipment. Verify system performance through testing and/or simulation and write test reports.
  • Guide the EE team using effective design and test guidelines and processes.
  • Mentor junior engineers, providing effective design and test guidelines and processes, and fostering effective communication within the team.
  • Work with the Hardware Engineering Manager to review requirements for proposed products, estimate the labor and material costs involved, understand impact to the schedule, and identify potential obstacles and opportunities for design improvement.
  • Create design verification test (DVT) plans, perform design verification testing & create test reports
  • Work closely with mechanical and electrical engineers to define and design PCBA and antennas for new products.
  • Establish and maintain vendor relationships, working with purchasing to communicate with outside vendors to locate needed parts.


Qualifications and Skills
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent required, MS in Electrical Engineering preferred
  • Must have in-depth experience with the nuances of Altium Designer, particularly in PCB layout, for at least 2 years
  • 10+ years RF and electrical engineering experience, RF front end design experience is preferred. Power supply and digital design experience are pluses.
  • RF Simulation experience with CST is preferred
  • Experience with PCBA RF design, particularly with battery-powered systems
  • Experience with RF systems and designing to mitigate EMI strongly desired
  • Experience with small form-factor devices, microcontrollers, batteries, and power supplies strongly desired
  • Self-motivated with ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Experience leading and advising small teams is a plus
  • Ability to properly and simultaneously balance designing products and working in a team
  • Ability to estimate project labor and materials costs, and to define schedules
  • Ability to utilize laboratory equipment: Oscilloscopes, signal generators, vector network analyzers, data acquisition modules, spectrum analyzers, programmable power supplies/loads and others.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office. Ability to develop presentation and report material to illustrate designs.
