As a Crisis Specialist in our Non-Financial Risk Management team, you will have the opportunity to collaborate globally across all business units and corporate functions. The role will involve extensive process redevelopment and redesign, as well as significant stakeholder management and collaboration across locations and functions, as we look to evolve established programs to clearly support business partners in preparing for and responding to incidents and crises.

In addition, the Crisis Specialist will advise Head of Crisis and Incident Management on opportunities to enhance the design and operating effectiveness of the internal control environment for Northern Trust's risk management practices.

The key responsibilities of the role may include:
  • Thought leadership in the maturity and evolution of the enterprise Incident Management framework.
  • Work with the Non-Financial Risk function and Crisis and Incident Management stakeholders to develop and maintain policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Identify current state risk management activities and governance structure, assist with formulation of the required/desired state based on regulatory and best practices, conduct gap analysis.
  • Mature organizational Crisis and Incident Response Plans, Playbooks, Annexes, and Appendices.
  • Consult with Lines of Business on Incident Response Plans, Playbooks, and Runbooks.
  • Develop, administrate, and facilitate Crisis and Incident Management training for various stakeholders and audiences.
  • Develop, facilitate, and participate in various Crisis and Incident Management internal and external exercises.
  • Implement intelligence, threat, and risk monitoring capability to pro-actively prepare for, mitigate against, and respond to potential hazards.
  • Provide consultation support with partners in the development and execution of Crisis and Incident Management exercises.
  • Represent the team, department, and company in internal and external meetings, conferences, and working groups.
  • Provide support and guidance for audits and regulatory examinations.
  • Provide effective review and challenge of Incident Management plans, test results, and adherence to the policies and standards.
  • Monitor, respond to, and escalate incidents within the Crisis Management Framework.
  • Coordinate incident management activities in response to incidents of moderate and severe complexity and impact.
  • Collaborate with Incident Response partners such as Information Technology, Legal, Human Resources, Risk, Fraud, Security, Facilities, and the business.
  • Consult with geographic and functional incident management teams to support an effective response to incidents.
  • Support post-incident recovery tasks to return to a "Business as Usual" state.
  • Develop post-incident Lessons Learned and After-Action Reports (AAR).
  • Support the creation and fulfilment of relevant committee, board, and regulatory reporting including metrics, Key Risk Indicators (KRI) and Key Performance Indicators (KPI).
  • Implement program improvements to mitigate against risks, strengthen capabilities to respond, and enhance the resiliency of the organization.
  • Maintains familiarization and technical expertise across the firm including organizational structure, personnel, activities and products, new product development, financial performance and risk and problem areas.
  • Monitor regulatory updates and provide team with guidance on impact of changes in regulatory environment and how to adjust corporate programs to support.
  • Interacts, partners, and presents to Senior and Executive Management to understand the risks/challenges within the business, business changes and other significant events that could significantly affect the firm or adherence to regulatory requirements and risk appetite.
  • Manages and performs special projects as assigned.
  • Participates in meetings with business units, Senior, and Executive Management to discuss program implementation and risk insights.
  • Communicates with partners at all levels, developing and presenting recommendations on operations and controls.
  • Drive and support change in the Non-Financial Risk team in line with the vision and strategy.
The successful candidate will benefit from having:
  • Strong foundational knowledge of Incident Management and Incident Response concepts
  • Strong problem-solving skills (e.g., ability to structure ambiguous problems and mobilize diverse teams to solve them; ability to lead the team to define the root cause of issues)
  • Strong analytical skills (e.g., financial analysis, budgeting, strategic planning)
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • Deep understanding of project management and portfolio management techniques and methods (i.e., what good looks like), change management principles.
  • At-scale project management experience across a portfolio of initiatives (e.g., defining objectives and success metrics, developing execution plans, identifying, and managing dependencies, anticipating, and resolving roadblocks, ensuring that the project teams stay on track, proactively managing dependencies and making purposeful trade-offs)
  • Experience in leading diverse, cross-functional teams to produce the best solution, including coaching and building capabilities for high-quality execution.
  • Ability to move people to act (e.g., convening, structuring, owning the agenda and facilitating meetings and workshops to lead groups to agreement and commitment to execute)
  • Ability to establish trust-based relationships with stakeholders across enterprise, lead them towards common objectives and managing upwards and downwards (e.g., experience with acting as a constructive conduit between business and non-business teams)
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with all audiences, including senior leaders, in a structured manner, including on high-sensitivity topics (e.g., organizational structure, funding)
  • Ability to develop hypotheses and make quick decisions in a fail-fast supportive environment that fosters and encourages a continuous improvement mindset and execution.
Expertise Required
  • Bachelor's Degree or commensurate related job experience
  • 7+ years of experience in Incident Response, Emergency Management, Crisis Management and/or Risk Management
  • Strong business writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functions to achieve measurable results.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple requests at the same time.
  • Detail oriented with strong analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
