About Alternatives, Inc.

Our organization is dedicated to empowering young individuals to forge a just future through practices that heal individuals, restore communities, and transform systems. Since our inception in 1971, we have pioneered innovative alternatives to conventional approaches in Chicago's youth services sector. Our therapy, prevention, and leadership development programs are designed to support young people in addressing the root causes of substance abuse, grief, and trauma while cultivating essential social-emotional, career, and social change skills. Additionally, we provide training, coaching, and advocacy for youth-serving institutions to adopt restorative and trauma-informed practices.

Role Description

Crisis situations are ongoing, and so is our commitment. Individual and family crisis support is a vital aspect of Alternatives' Comprehensive Community-Based Youth Services for young individuals at heightened risk of involvement in the Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare systems. We operate a 24-hour emergency hotline for youth facing homelessness or family conflict, which necessitates flexible scheduling. This role involves providing crisis intervention at various community locations, including police stations and hospitals. Our team excels in managing afternoon, evening, and overnight shifts. Typical weekday scheduling is from 5 PM to 9 AM, while weekend shifts run from Friday at 5 PM to Monday at 9 AM. Crisis staff are not required to work consecutive weekends.

This position entails: in-person crisis response, mediating family conflicts, and ensuring the safety of young individuals. Following the initial crisis intervention, youth are connected with Youth Advocates who continue to support them in avoiding system involvement. On-call work is primarily scheduled during evenings and weekends, with a minimum commitment of one weekend per month. The impact of this role on our communities is significant, as it directly addresses family discord, fosters positive interactions, and connects families with trauma-informed care resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commit to 16-hour on-call shifts during scheduled weekends.
  • Provide evening and weekend coverage as assigned by the Supervisor, including holiday shifts as negotiated.
  • Respond promptly to calls from the Alternatives answering service, maintaining a response time of 45 minutes to designated community sites.
  • Assess the immediate needs of youth and families, determining the necessity for psychiatric evaluation and crisis stabilization.
  • Collaborate effectively with law enforcement, DCFS, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive service delivery and advocate for clients' rights.
  • Complete all required documentation, including lockout reports, in a professional manner and submit to Alternatives, Inc. promptly after crisis intervention.
  • Consult with on-call crisis workers and supervisory staff as needed.
  • Work within Trauma-informed and Restorative Justice frameworks.
  • Participate in regular supervisory meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Communicate Alternatives' mission, policies, and services effectively.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Director or Supervisor in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in human services or a related field, with knowledge of adolescent and family dynamics.
  2. Demonstrated cultural competency in working with system-involved, homeless, LGBTQ, Black, Latinx, and Indigenous youth.
  3. Possession of a valid driver's license and insurance, with access to a vehicle during work hours.
  4. Residency within a 45-minute radius of the designated service area.
  5. COVID vaccination is mandatory for all employees to the extent permissible under applicable law.
