About Alternatives, Inc.
At Alternatives, we are dedicated to empowering young individuals to foster a just future through healing practices that benefit individuals, restore communities, and transform systems. Since our inception in 1971, we have pioneered innovative approaches in the youth services sector in Chicago. Our programs, which encompass school and community-based therapy, prevention, and leadership development, enable young people to confront the root causes of substance abuse, grief, and trauma while cultivating essential social-emotional, career, and social change skills. Additionally, we provide training, coaching, and advocacy for youth-serving institutions to adopt restorative and trauma-informed practices.
Role Responsibilities
The nature of crisis is constant, and so is our commitment. Providing individual and family crisis support is a fundamental aspect of Alternatives' Comprehensive Community-Based Youth Services for at-risk youth. We operate a 24-hour emergency hotline catering to young individuals who may have fled their homes or faced expulsion. This role entails delivering crisis intervention at various community locations, including police stations and hospitals. Our team excels in managing afternoon, evening, and overnight shifts. Typical scheduling includes weekday shifts from 5 PM to 9 AM and weekend shifts from Friday at 5 PM to Monday at 9 AM. Our Crisis staff are not required to work consecutive weekends.
This position encompasses in-person crisis response, mediating family conflicts, and ensuring the safety of young individuals. After addressing the immediate needs of youth in crisis, they are connected with Youth Advocates who continue to support them in preventing system involvement. On-call shifts are primarily scheduled outside of standard business hours, including nights and at least one weekend per month. The impact of this role on our communities is profound, as it directly contributes to resolving family conflicts, enhancing positive interactions, and connecting families with resources for trauma-informed care.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Availability to work 16-hour on-call shifts during scheduled weekends.
- Providing evening and/or weekend coverage as directed by the Supervisor, including holiday coverage as needed.
- Responding promptly to calls from the Alternatives answering service, maintaining a response time of 45 minutes to designated community sites.
- Conducting thorough assessments of the immediate issues faced by youth and families, including the need for psychiatric evaluation and crisis stabilization.
- Collaborating effectively with law enforcement, DCFS, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive service delivery and advocate for clients' rights.
- Completing all necessary documentation, including lockout reports, in a professional manner and submitting them to Alternatives, Inc. promptly.
- Consulting with on-call crisis workers and supervisory staff as necessary.
- Working within Trauma-informed and Restorative Justice frameworks.
- Participating in regular supervisory meetings and professional development activities.
- Communicating Alternatives' mission, policies, and services effectively.
- Completing additional tasks as assigned by the Director or Supervisor in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in human services or a related field; knowledge of adolescent and family dynamics, as well as child abuse issues.
- Demonstrated cultural competency in working with system-involved, homeless, LGBTQ, Black, Latinx, and Indigenous youth.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and insurance, with access to a vehicle during work and on-call hours.
- Residency within a 45-minute radius of the designated service area.
- Compliance with COVID-19 vaccination requirements as mandated by applicable law.
