  • Position Summary
    • The Clinical Counselor 1-6 is responsible for providing crisis assessment as part of behavioral health services to patients and their families as a part of the multidisciplinary team. The emphasis on individual therapy through history and summary, creation of a treatment plan, conducting treatment conferences, and assessing individual responses to treatments, including group therapy. The role includes areas such as crisis assessment, intake, safety checks, and coordination with other departments, entities, and services. This role is part of the team that creates and ensures a therapeutic environment for behavioral health patients. Follow all federal, state, and local regulations, UNC Health Appalachian policies and procedures, and departmental policies and procedures. The Clinical Counselor 1-6 works within their role and scope and will enlist other health care providers, treatment team members, physicians, and leadership, as needed.
  • Position Qualifications
    • Minimum Education
      • Clinical Counselor I-QMHP-Qualified Mental Health Professional:
        • Bachelor's in Human Services field with 2 years of experience.
        • Bachelor's in a non-Human Services field with 4 years of experience.
      • Clinical Counselor 2-Master's in Human Services field and pursuing non-LCSW licensure:
        • LPC
        • LPA
        • LMFT
        • LCAS
      • Clinical Counselor 3-Master's in Human Services field, and Provisional license (pursuing licensure):
        • LCSW
      • Clinical Counselor 4-Fully licensed (which assumes Masters):
        • LPC
        • LPA
        • LMFT
        • LCAS
      • Clinical Counselor 5
        • Fully licensed LCSW, or
        • Ph.D. in non-psychology study OR Ph.D. in psychology pending NC licensure.
      • Clinical Counselor 6
        • Ph.D. in Psychology and fully licensed.

      • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, family, staff, and physicians and acts within the chain of command, utilizing positive verbal and non-verbal skills.
      • Competent in delivering safe and effective patient care within legal limits of license and certifications within hospital policies and procedures; federal, state, and local regulations and regulatory compliance.
      • Knowledge of the continuum of care provided in the therapeutic patient environment.
      • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, family, staff, and physicians.
      • Ability to effectively assess, plan, and implement therapeutic services in a multidisciplinary setting. Particular skills in therapy and assessment, knowledgeable about the needs of geriatric and adult populations; trained in a variety of treatment philosophies to respond to varying patient responses to treatment.
