QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Ohio School Nurse registration
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Registered Nurse certificate
  • Current CPR certification
JOB SUMMARY

The ASP School Nurse provides health care for students; assesses school health and safety status; maintains student immunization and health records; and serves as a resource regarding health-related issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides routine and emergency medical care to students including referral for medical treatment within scope of nursing responsibility
  • Conducts all health screenings and assists the nonpublic school in complying with regulations of the Ohio Department of Health
  • Maintain all immunization data, health records and required forms for students
  • Assists in the prevention and control of disease within the school setting
  • Interprets the Toledo/Lucas County Health department's rules and regulations relating to the control of communicable disease
  • Keeps informed on new health laws, policies, regulations, trends and treatments
  • Serves as resource person on health-related issues for the nonpublic school staff, administrators, students, and parents
  • Inform the nonpublic school administrator of changing health programs, laws and safety standards
  • Utilizes and acts as liaison with various health and community agencies on behalf of the nonpublic school administrators
  • Works with nonpublic school parents to meet the health needs of their children
  • Maintains adequate inventory of health aids and supplies
  • Administers medication as prescribed by physician with written parental consent
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Participates in school Intervention Assistance Teams on request
  • Makes phone calls to verify student absences
  • Seek opportunities to improve skills and grow professionally; attend all required meetings and in-services
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of nonpublic school policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of Ohio laws and regulations governing the Auxiliary Services Program
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to school and student health and safety
  • Knowledge of FERPA and HIPPA
  • Ability to use technology as both a productivity tool and as a method of communication; proficient in computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Docs)
  • Ability to operate and interpret results from basic medical equipment including but not limited to audiometer, stethoscope, and thermometer
  • Ability to assess the health condition of students and apply medical knowledge
  • Ability to maintain accurate student medical records
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, administrators, and public
  • Ability to model ethical principles and democratic ideals for students and the community
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to :
  • Stand for periods of time, move around the work site, move from one work site to another, sit at a desk
  • Stoop, kneel or crouch to assist students
  • Occasionally lift and/or move materials up to fifty pounds
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders by talking and listening
  • Operate a computer and other technology devices
  • Read and analyze data (close visual acuity)
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Noise level may escalate in group or event settings
  • May include exposure to disease and infections
  • Exposure to inclement weather when traveling from one work site to another
  • May be required to deal with students with behavioral risks
  • May require local travel
  • May also require attendance at meetings outside of regular work hours (e.g. early morning, after school)
  • Involves stress as a result of the responsibility to ensure that laws, regulations and procedural rules are followed, the responsibility of dealing with individual student concerns and maintaining student discipline, and the demands of maintaining effective communication with other staff members, students and parents.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment at the ESC of Lake Erie West
  • Complete a satisfactory background check
  • Possess a valid driver's license or have transportation
  • Review the ESC Staff Handbook as well as Board Policy to understand job expectations
