Summary
The Maintenance Worker II responsible for performing a variety of skilled routine maintenance and construction tasks within the county facilities. This position is primarily responsible for maintaining the department's buildings, grounds and equipment, and ensuring that the facilities are neat, clean, safe and presentable to the public. The employee in this position is classified as an essential employee and may be required to work when the County offices are officially closed due to inclement weather, natural disaster, other emergency situations, etc. Weekend/Holiday work as required.
Essential Duties
- Assist and or led general repairs and maintenance, as needed (e.g., electrical, plumbing, waterline repairs, carpentry, construction, painting, special event set-up and removal, etc.).
- Operate heavy equipment such as loader, backhoe, and tractor if qualified and if required.
- Maintain supplies and parts.
- Maintain, service and diagnose vehicles, small equipment (minor repairs, metal work, welding, etc.).
- Perform grounds maintenance (mowing; weeding; trash pickup; mulching; planting trees and flowers; and road, trail and culvert maintenance and repair, etc.).
- Perform maintenance and safety inspections of facilities.
- Pesticide application (under direction of a certified applicator).
- Recordkeeping.
- Resource management (assists and or led with a variety of natural resource management activities).
- Snow removal using hand tools and equipment up to 12,000 GVW, plows and spreaders.
- Facility maintenance and repair (e.g., painting, repair or replacement of faulty equipment, etc.).
- Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as required
- Ability to multi-task.

- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- Trade school or equivalent working knowledge in one or more of the following: plumbing, carpentry, roofing, masonry, electrical and various other trades.
- General knowledge to operate basic equipment (e.g., lawn maintenance equipment, carpentry, plumbing or electrical tools.).
- Ability to work alone with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate in a clear and appropriate manner.
- Ability to participate effectively as a team player.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Manual dexterity.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Working knowledge and experience with equipment operation.
- Ability to work extended hours on weekends and during special events, as directed.
- Working knowledge of hand and power tools and materials.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Minimum of two years in a building and/or grounds maintenance environment.
- Ability to establish priorities, work independently and proceed with objectives without supervision.
- Ability to solve problems.
- Ability to use all machines and equipment related to the upkeep of county facilities.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task.
- General understanding of specific events and programs pertaining to the department.
- General knowledge of county and department policies and procedures.
- Ability to read and understand basic construction drawings.
- A valid Class B driver's license may be required depending on job assignment
Relevant background checks, clearances, physicals, drug tests, and any other assessments or evaluations will be conducted after an offer of employment is given per County policy.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have:
- Basic knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management System
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk; reach or work with arms above shoulder height; bend, twist or rotate at the waist; kneel, stoop, crouch or squat while working; and drive a vehicle. Occasionally, you will need to push items weighing up to 100 pounds; work with machinery, sit, crawl, climb or work on a ladder, climb stairs.
The specific vision requirements for this position are:
- Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
- Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more).
- Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).
- Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point).
- Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships).
Work Environment:
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
- Will work outside, depending on assignment, with exposure to various weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, etc.).
- May be exposed to fumes and chemicals while working with certain materials such as solvents, herbicides, algaecides and coatings.
- Grounds and building maintenance will cause exposure to dust and pollens.
- Will work alone or with a crew, depending on the assignment.
