JOB DESCRIPTION:
The City of Novato has an internship opportunity available within the Information Technology Division of the Administrative Services Department.

Under the direction of the IT staff, the IT Intern will work closely with professional IT staff to assist departments with the information technology needs and learn to provide help to customers through the IT Service desk.

This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates and/or students who are looking for on-the-job experience in a wide variety of Information Technology areas. Example of Duties

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
  • Help with install and implement personal computer hardware and software.
  • Learn to troubleshoot technical issues with desktop computers, laptops, network printers, scanners and smart-phones.
  • Learn to perform a variety of technical and specialized technology duties.
  • May research and locate information for customers and team members.
  • Develop skills, knowledge and abilities in procedures and specific functions of the IT Department.
  • Work on special projects when assigned.
Typical Qualifications

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Training

Any combination of related experience and training would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: some experience is preferred, and/or the ability to working with technical hardware and software support.

Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized microcomputer training courses, preferably at the college level or through a training institute.

License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license and proof of automobile liability insurance as required by the position.

  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Modern office equipment and procedures including use of word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.

  • Learn to provide technical support to the City's information systems including installing, troubleshooting and maintaining hardware, software and related peripheral equipment.

  • Learn to maintain records, process and prepare reports.
  • Read and understand complicated technical manuals, instructions, drawings, and sketches, graphs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and data.
  • Operate a computer using word processing and business software and other office equipment.
  • Learn to write and modify instructions, procedures, manuals, documentation; analyze problems, develop effective solutions, and prepare cost estimates for review by supervisory staff.
  • Follow, interpret and explain City and department policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective, tactful and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including various cultural and ethnic groups.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Physical Skills: Able to use standard office equipment, including a computer; sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and maintain sustained posture in a seated or standing position for prolonged periods of time; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person, over the telephone, and to make public presentations; lift and carry up to 30lbs of files, and materials.

Work Environment: Mobility to work in a typical office and/or field setting.

Ability to: Travel to different sites and locations; drive safely to different sites and locations; maintain a safe driving record; work protracted and irregular hours and evening meetings or off shift work for meeting attendance or participation in specific projects or programs; available for evening meetings.
