RECREATION COORDINATOR - PROGRAM & CAMPS

The Recreation Coordinator of Programs and Camps has coordination responsibility over ongoing recreation classes, camps, and events. Examples may include, but are not limited to, youth recreation classes, teen programs, community recreation events, the district Living History program, and youth and teen summer camps.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

General Statement of Duties: Plans, implements and evaluates recreational programs, activities and events; does related work within the Recreation Programming Department as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class: An employee in this classification is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing recreational programs, activities and events. Examples may include activity programming for all ages, camps, classes, and workshops. Work is performed
under the general supervision of the Recreation Programming Department supervisor, who reviews work primarily based on results attained and on the accomplishment of outlined objectives and goals. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification. This position is responsible for assisting in the recruitment and scheduling of staff and instructors, and for observing their performance and providing input to the supervisor of the program.

Examples Of Essential Duties Performed: (Illustrative only. Any single position of a class will not necessarily involve all of the duties listed, and many positions will involve duties that are not listed.)

  • Assume primary responsibility for program-assigned tasks including, but not limited to, planning, implementation and evaluation of recreational programs, activities and events for community.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and orienting instructors, staff and contractors, observes staff and programs, and provides input to supervisor.
  • Responsible for coordination of participant registration through district registration software, program schedules, facility preparation and reservations, and ensuring the instructor has the appropriate equipment needed.
  • Understand and follow all internal district support processes and procedures including, but not limited to, event support requisitions, marketing requests, volunteer requests, and maintenance support requests.
  • Creates programmatic cost recoveries and ensures that classes are meeting cost recovery goals set forth by the district.
  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service. Communicate professionally, effectively and work cooperatively with all staff, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Provide relevant program information and goals to, and collaborate with, the Willamalane Community Engagement department to successfully market the program.
  • Inventory, distribute and maintain program supplies and equipment. Creates curriculum, and orders and/or purchases supplies required for activities and programs within authorized spending limits.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings and team building opportunities, program orientations, and training, as required.
  • Perform other job-related duties or tasks as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of methods involved in coordinating, scheduling and implementing recreational activities, skills and safety precautions involved in recreation programming, principles of budget allocation, record keeping and general office procedures and practices; knowledge of computer software and Microsoft Suite, and the ability to learn and navigate new systems.

Skills: First Aid and CPR.

Abilities: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships; work independently toward established priorities and organize individual workload; demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate work for successes and areas of improvement across multiple programs; act calmly and effectively in possible emergency situations.

Physical Demands of The Position: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is expected to support classes and at times instruct movement classes. Coordinator is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis such as boxes/bags of activity materials, stacking tables and chairs, and etc. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 75% of the work period while working with children in activities. The employee will likely spend over 65% of the work period indoors, and exposure to temperature extremes is minimal. Exposure to loud noise is low, and never requires ear protection. Persons with disabilities may be able to perform the essential duties of this class with reasonable accommodation. Personal Protective Equipment: Nitrile gloves for the administration of First Aid.

Required Experience and Training: Minimum qualifications include three years of progressively responsible experience working in community recreation program facilitation, coordination, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and ability to perform above-described duties.

Preferred Experience and Training: Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree in parks and recreation management, community recreation, or related area which includes working closely with youth and the general public or four years of experience in community recreation and youth and family program coordination.

Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Desirable Special Requirements: Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license; safe driving record.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Hours/Shifts

Expected to work regular workday hours (up to 35 hours a week), hours may fluctuate according to program need and may include weekends/ evenings, as needed.
