Special Recreation Program Manager

Job Summary:

The Springfield Park District is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Special Recreation Program Manager to lead the development and implementation of assigned recreation programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and executing programs in primary areas of day camps, youth sports, and special events.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan and implement assigned recreation programs, including day camps, youth sports, and special events.
  • Develop and innovate new recreation programs based on community demand and cultural trends.
  • Provide safe and innovative summer and winter day camp activities, events, and policies for children aged 5-25.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate inclusion aide staff, including program instructors, coaches, and support staff.
  • Promote interest in assigned programs through publicity and marketing, utilizing program brochures, flyers, and other communication tools.
  • Utilize social media and interactive media for marketing and interaction with participants and public relations.
  • Work closely with the Special Recreation Supervisor and other Recreation Department Program Managers to develop and implement recreation programming and special events.
  • Coordinate with department heads on physical arrangements and logistics for programs and special events conducted at park facilities and grounds.
  • Manage activity input and facility space management, as well as education and outreach needs, registration and refunds, daily admission processing passes, and POS touch screens.
  • Complete thorough evaluations of assigned programs and supervised staff.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with staff, volunteers, participants, parents, and community.
  • Maintain a positive professional image with the community.
  • Monitor facility and program inventory, supplies, equipment, and services in accordance with the park district purchasing policy.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, sport management, or a closely related field.
  • One to three years of supervisory experience in recreation administration, sport management, or a related field.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification or ability to obtain.
  • Experience in managing facility and program budgets preferred.
  • Ability to learn new activities and Special Olympics sports and rules, while adapting to new situations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to coordinate, analyze, and utilize various reports and records.
  • Ability to learn new skills and knowledge.
  • Decision-making, conflict resolution, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  • Management and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and through presentations.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, social media, and online recreation software applications.
