Working/Functional Title International Student & Scholar Advisor Position Summary The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) is dedicated to serving Michigan State University's (MSU) international community. Our goal is to assist international students and scholars in successfully accomplishing their academic and personal objectives. OISS provides support services to over 5,000 international students and more than 1,000 visiting international scholars annually. In addition, OISS develops year-round academic, cultural and social programming, and serves as a global resource for the larger MSU community. OISS contributes to the internationalization of MSU by providing opportunities for growth through cross-cultural interactions. Reporting to an Assistant Director, the International Student and Scholar Advisor (International Student/Scholar Adviser I) is part of a dynamic office of professionals committed to supporting a large international population at MSU, with 5,000+ international students representing more than 100 countries worldwide. The incumbent provides the full range of immigration services to students and scholars and serves as Designated School Official (DSO) for the F-1 student program and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J- visa program; maintains in-depth, advanced knowledge to interpret and provide guidance on federal immigration regulations as they pertain to our international students and scholars; independently advises students and scholars and their respective departments and recommends solutions related to immigration status and overall immigration strategy. This position will advise staff, faculty and administration on immigration and intercultural issues. This is a pool posting with a potential to fill three openings. International Student and Scholar Advisors are part of one of three internal teams led by an Assistant Director. Student Advising Team. Responsibilities include office wide training on F regulations; maintaining office practices related to student immigration issues; student immigration related reporting; collaborating with university partners on issues related to students; issuing initial immigration documents for students; immigration related communication to students. Scholar Advising Team. Responsibilities include office wide training on J regulations; maintaining office practices related to scholar immigration issues; scholar immigration related reporting; collaborating with university partners on issues related to scholars; issuing initial immigration documents for scholars; immigration related communication for scholars; orientation and engagement activities for scholars. Engagement Team. Responsibilities include engagement initiatives for students such as orientations, weekly Coffee Hours, OISS Weekly newsletter, social media, trips, etc.; liasing with MSU student organizations with an international focus; collaborating with university and community partners on engagement initiatives; lead student success initiatives; support global DEI initiatives. International Student and Scholar Advisors are expected to work on-site a minimum of three days per week, more during peak times. This is subject to change at any time. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one to two years of post-bachelor's degree work in international education, higher education, counseling, international affairs/relations, social work, area studies or related program; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in international education, academic advising, student affairs, or related fields. A familiarity with immigration regulations; significant intercultural experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired Qualification
