The Santa Barbara Culinary Experience’s mission is to showcase the best of Santa Barbara’s hospitality and tourism community through special events that bring the best of the wider gastronomy world to Santa Barbara. The events have an emphasis on experiential education that is also fun. It includes curating special offers among Santa Barbara area restaurants, hotels, bars, wineries, and retailers. The target audience is everyone interested in learning about and enjoying gastronomy and the culinary arts. The Santa Barbara Culinary Experience (the SBCE) is spiritually inspired by the mixture of fun and learning about food and drink for which Julia Child, a long-time resident and fan of Santa Barbara, passionately advocated.

The Julia Child Foundation’s involvement is to foster this legacy and help support the Santa Barbara area culinary, hospitality and tourism industry and benefit the wider community while also raising funds to help the Foundation continue to make grants to non-profits working in gastronomy and the culinary arts, both in the Santa Barbara region and nationally.

The Event Director will manage and coordinate the and its Taste of Santa Barbara Event (TOSB) to benefit The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts (the Foundation) and other local food-related nonprofit organizations. The 2025 Taste of Santa Barbara, May 12-18, 2025 will include the key signature event: TOSB Wines at El Presidio and a selection of farm and/or winery tours during the principal weekend as well as collaborations managed with partners, including cooking classes, special chef-driven dinners with local restaurants during the lead-in week, plus other dynamic events/experiences to be determined. In addition to the TOSB, we plan to organize at least two interim smaller events (one in the fall of 2024 and one in winter or early spring of 2025) under the umbrella of the SBCE to continue the momentum and expand the reach of our work to shine a spotlight on Santa Barbara’s bounty.

HYBRID ROLE DEFINED: This position is only a fit for someone in the Santa Barbara-area. It requires not only in-depth local marketing knowledge, but pre-existing relationships in the community as well as the ability to conduct meetings in-person in Santa Barbara County on a regular basis. However, many of the administrative functions can be performed from a remote work location in Santa Barbara County as the SBCE does not maintain office space.

The Event Director’s specific role and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the overall planning, organization and implementation of the SBCE and its events including the TOSB
  • Helping determine the overall theme and programming strategy for the Taste of Santa Barbara, in consultation with the Foundation and the Advisory Committee
  • Helping determine the overall theme and programming for at least two interim mini-events in Santa Barbara County, in consultation with the Foundation and the Advisory Committee
  • Identifying, recruiting and negotiating contracts to form a virtual team, including but not limited to:
  • Identifying, recruiting and coordinating the various participating organizations
  • Identifying and securing the locations for Signature Events on May 16-18th
  • Recruiting active participation from hotels, restaurants, wineries, brew pubs, cocktail bars, and select retailers throughout Santa Barbara County
  • Coordinating, engaging and consulting with the SBCE’s Advisory Committee
  • Retaining, supervising and working in sync with the identified event production entity.
  • Recruiting and overseeing any volunteers, as needed, to produce and manage events
  • Overseeing the SBCE’s marketing communications
  • Developing, overseeing and implementing the SBCE’s marketing strategy
  • Leading the SBCE’s social media strategy and maintaining a regular public presence by posting on a weekly basis, and/or supervising a contractor, to produce posts
  • Measuring satisfaction of event attendees and participating organizations
  • Overseeing event fundraising and sponsorship for the SBCE.
  • Conducting outreach and sending proposals to potential sponsors in tandem with similar efforts undertaken by the Foundation and the Advisory Committee
  • Managing the relationships with committed sponsors
  • Managing the overall budget for the SBCE.
  • Managing, Coordinating and Negotiating Contracts with all SBCE vendors and participants
  • Coordinating invoices, donations and sponsor inflows with the SBCE’s fiscal sponsor: the Santa Barbara Foundation.
  • Organizing and implementing the TOSB’s ticketing system
