Reports to: Sawmill Supervisor

Department: Sawmill

Wage: $22.85/ Hourly (.30cent shift differential swing/.60cents for graveyard) - Full-time/Long-term Position.

Shift/Schedule: Swing Shift Opportunity/ 10 Hour Shifts.

Position Purpose: The Sawmill Utility works with each machine operator throughout the sawmill to maximize lumber flow and efficiency. Assists with saw changes, clearing jam ups, lumber flow issues, and provides breaks. Communicates with production supervisor, maintenance, and forklift operators regarding production issues. Working back-up for Sawmill Primary Relief and Lead. NOTE: Within 30 days, must be certified in four, level 3 or higher positions designated by the plant superintendent based on mill needs.

Position Functions:

Essential Functions* These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job.

Sawmill utility is responsible for coordinating break rotations.

Clear jam ups at each machine center-Utility will be called on a hand held radio to assist

operators when jam-ups occur. Utilities are required to use multiple hand tools depending on

the situation. Pike poles, picaroons, overhead hoists and chainsaws. Task requires the ability

to effectively troubleshoot an issue and break the jam up into steps to efficiently and safely

complete task.

Relief Operator/Break Rotation

Utility's will be cross trained at multiple machine centers to assist in break rotations and for

coverage in situations such as vacations and call-ins. (Such machine centers are Board Edger

L4, Horizontal L3, Newness Edger L3, Sorter L4, and #1 Stacker L4 and Outside Driver).

Help with scheduled or unscheduled saw changes.

Clean up in and around mill as needed by supervisor.

Must be certified to complete saw changes and Fall Harness certified.

Other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions These duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential.

Unplug chipper.

Operate mobile equipment, forklift, and skid steer, as needed for production or cross-training

L3.

Working Environment: (1) Inside 90%, average temperature 70 degrees F (2) Outside 10%; extreme low temperature 10 degrees F, extreme high temperature 105 degrees F. Noise or vibration: Machine noise to include machine being operated as well as other machines close by including Forklifts. Hazards: See Job Hazard Analysis. (3) Atmospheric conditions: Fumes: Wood, Dust: Limited, Mist: Water, Odors: Wood particle, Gasses: None, Poor Ventilation: None

Personal Protective Equipment Required: (1) Eye Protection. (2) Hearing Protection. (3) Rubber or Leather based gloves when handling dry veneer. (4) Approved Footwear.

Physical Demands: See the Physical Capabilities as listed below; this position requires constant use of hearing and vision, bilateral use of arms and hands, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching, and occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling more than 30 lbs.

Skills: Must have excellent hand eye coordination. Use vision/hearing continuously. Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, machine specific lockout procedures, monthly safety training, etc. Worker generally works alone with little supervision. Operators must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task. Ability to prioritize, organize and make necessary decisions.

Safety: (1) Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14 step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don't over reach, get help as needed to push loads out). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection). (5) Be aware of and communicate with your co-worker at all times (ex: forklift driver). (6) Will be required to read and write during safety training.
