Customer Service Assistant - Research Department (Full-Time)

The full-time Central Library Research Department Customer Service Assistant is trained to help customers have an excellent experience, provides direction to customers concerning library services and circulation policies; charges, discharges and renews library materials; sorts and routes returned library materials to proper locations; processes daily operations report; checks materials for wear or damage; performs other duties as assigned; is flexible and adaptable throughout the workday, in the type and location of work to be accomplished in order to provide superior customer experiences.

Some additional qualifications and essential functions include:

  • Provides general information in person and by phone assisting customers in locating and discovering materials, connecting with available library services, or providing information about the library, referring questions to the appropriate resource;
  • Answers basic research and reference questions, referring questions to subject specialists as needed;
  • Locates and retrieves requested research materials;
  • Performs shelf-reading, sorts and organizes library materials;
  • May help customers with basic technology and Internet problems;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate library's automated systems and self-service tools;
  • Ability to operate audio-visual equipment, smart phones, mobile devices, computer hardware and software, and quickly learn new databases and consumer devices including (and not limited to) e-readers, tablets and personal computers.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required;
  • Bilingual English - Spanish preferred;
  • No previous experience required;

Salary: $14.42

FT/PT Status: Full Time

A full benefit package (medical, dental, retirement, paid time off) are offered with this position.

Schedule:

Monday: 8 am - 5 pm

Tuesday: 8 am - 5 pm

Wednesday: 12 pm - 9 pm

Thursday: 12 pm - 9 pm

Friday: 8 am- 5 pm

Rotating Saturdays 8 am - 5 pm and the occasional Sunday 1 pm - 5 pm

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Physical Activity: For most positions work regularly requires stooping, bending and light lifting such as three or four reams of paper, four or five books, or other materials (up to 20 pounds). Some positions require moderate physical exertion, such as regularly lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) such as crates full of books or pushing heavy (up to 100 pounds) wheeled carts full of books, on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions.

Work Environment: Work environment involves everyday risk or discomforts which require normal safety precautions, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and or avoidance of trips and falls. For some positions there are usually no major sources of discomfort; work is essentially conducted in a normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, and air conditions. For some positions there may be occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less than optimal temperatures (extreme cold or heat) and air conditions due to exposure to the outdoors.
