Job Title: Program Director of Medical Laboratory Technician

Campus Location: Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a "home" location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: The overall purpose of this job is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Medical Laboratory Technology Program. Ensures compliance with the Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board, SACSCOC, and NAACLS statutes, rules and standards. This position high quality effective instruction in accordance with the catalog description and the approved course syllabi; Facilitates student learning, and performs evaluations of student learning for all assigned classes, using each course's standard course outline as a guide; Advises and mentors students about academic and career goals.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Investigate and review accreditation and state medical laboratory board requirements for a medical laboratory technician program. Develop, implement, evaluate and revise the Medical Laboratory Technology program's master plan of education. Perform all duties in accordance with both TBR and WSCC policies Maintain compliance with Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board and NAACLS. Oversee the organization and operation of the program. Coordinate development, implementation, and revision process for the program's curriculum design; including but not limited to, course descriptions, course requirements, and evaluation systems. Develop a program evaluation to ensure ongoing effectiveness through outcomes assessment of quality indicators. Evaluate program outcomes and implement program quality improvements.
  • Teach courses as assigned in accordance with the catalog description and the approved course syllabus; Travel to multiple campuses as assigned. Maintain student-instructor ratio. Stay abreast of current developments in the teaching discipline.
  • Advise and mentor students about academic and career goals. As well as supporting curricular and co-curricular activities within the college; Such as participating in graduation exercises and serving on college committees.
  • Collaborate collegially with faculty, dean, and academic leadership about curricular and programmatic issues and needs, student support, strategic plan, goals and business operations of the college. Work collegially as part of both discipline-specific and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Prepare and maintain the program budget within established parameters as needed for the program.
  • Oversee the evaluation, maintenance, selection, and purchase of educational materials and equipment to meet the needs of the program.
  • Submit all requested paperwork timely and completely, as well as, engage in minimum of 36 hours of documented continuing professional development every three years.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree: Medical Laboratory Scientist/ Medical Technologist with ASCP-BOC Generalist Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist/ Medical Technologist
  • Three years teaching and clinical laboratory experience.
  • The position requires knowledge of education methods and administration as well as current National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science accreditation procedures and certification procedures.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and standard office equipment (PC, phone, fax, email, copier, etc.), Banner software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with budgeting through contribution - perform analysis and interpretation that helps build or manage the budget.
  • Experience with data management.

Leadership & Supervisory: The incumbent directly supervises and evaluates work of employees in exempt and nonexempt jobs. Includes hiring, terminating, disciplining, appraising performance or strongly recommending such personnel actions; or functional guidance and/or project leadership over exempt staff engaged in activities on a recurring basis.

Environment & Working Conditions: This position is frequently exposed to conditions such as occasional extreme cold, frequent high heat, temperature changes, noise, vibrations and hazards when dealing with Medical Laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, blood gas analyzer, cell viability analyzer, DNA analyzer, microscopes, microbiological incubators, spectrophotometer, automatic colony counter.

  • Ability to travel by motor vehicle.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
