The Database Administrator (DBA) job family has responsibility for adhering to infrastructure design and technical guidelines, following standard practices during implementation and support activities for database systems owned by the CommonSpirit Database Engineering Team.

Database Administrators must possess a combination of technical, business and communication skills. This includes the ability to work with diverse groups and individuals within the IT organization and throughout CommonSpirit to ensure seamless and quality IT support for CommonSpirit's customers and in alignment with IT standards, controls and governance. In addition, they need the ability to interact with individuals from many different levels within the organization; peers, management, division leadership and corporate leadership.

Database Administrators also work closely with design architects, system engineers, project managers, other infrastructure technology teams and application support teams. This requires on-going efforts to improve their knowledge of; IT infrastructure, database infrastructure (both specific to the database platform and within the larger IT infrastructure), applications requirements, and other technologies (networking, storage, virtualization, etc.) as needed.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Installation, configuration and support of all versions, editions and key components of Microsoft SQL Server:
  • SQL Server Database Engine, Replication and SQL Maintenance Plans
  • SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Performs daily production support activities. Participates in DBA Team on-call rotation. Performs patching and code deployments across all environments. Ensures that all SQL Instances are in compliance with Installation Standards.
  • Maintains, Monitors and Develops pro-active solutions to ensure all databases have sufficient disk space for day to day use and that they have the appropriate backup strategy in place to meet Point in Time recovery SLAs.
  • Resolves daily Incident Tickets in a timely manner to meet SLA. Understands when to escalate Incidents to more experienced team members when needing assistance. Resolves all assigned Tasks to meet SLA requirements.
  • Takes ownership of any reported Incident, either via resolution or by re-assigning to designated team member or alternate team, and is knowledgeable and follows CommonSpirit Incident Management Policies and Procedures.
  • Exercises good judgment and implements solutions according to the standards of practices as defined by the Database Engineering Team. Consistently uses current ticketing system to document all Incidents, Requests, and Changes
  • Enforces standard security protocols as defined by the Database Team and IT Infrastructure. Participates in projects as assigned and completes requires tasks in a timely manner.
  • Actively works with Management and other Team Members to increase their own technical skills and to improve their own understanding of policies and procedures as they related specifically to the Database Engineering Team.
  • Takes full ownership of managing the entire database environment in partnership with other Database Team Members, Application Owners and IT Technology Teams. Strives to achieve "3 999's" in database performance, reliability and stability

Qualifications
  • BA or BS in Computer Science, Technology, or Business discipline or equivalent experience is required.
  • Up to 3+ years of professional experience in an IT technical or IT related field involving data and database systems is preferred.
  • Up to 3+ years' experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle or other relational database platform is preferred.
  • Up to 3+ years of experience in a clinical settings is preferred.
  • Up to 3+ years working with 5 - 50+ DB Servers is preferred.
  • Up to 3+ years' of experience providing support for a database environment, including but not limited to:
    database installations and configurations
    database user and maintenance tasks
    backups, restoring and migrating databases
    database monitoring and performance tuning
    managing daily operational tasks
    resolving standard Incidents in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates basic understanding of Microsoft T-SQL scripts and administration commands and basic PowerShell cmdlets.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform daily database monitoring and support activities, including but not limited to: database backups and restores, resolving general users (simple) requests, disk space management, installations and patching.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows Database Best Practices and has experience with basic troubleshooting methods to resolve routine database performance issues.
  • Demonstrates on-going effort to maintain current database skills and learning new technologies, including having a basic understanding of all components of the Microsoft SQL Server Database Platform.
  • Demonstrates effective time management and personal organization skills when prioritizing workload and executing assigned tasks. Is able to work independently as well as maintaining good communication with team members.
  • Exercises good judgment to resolve problems, recognizes boundaries of current skills and actively (and appropriately) seeks assistance from senior team members as needed.
  • Follows ITIL Best Practices and understands the value of the Change Management process. Documents work as appropriate for individual use and to maintain a shared knowledge base as part of a larger database team.
  • Demonstrates integrity and understands the importance of data security and follows Best Practices with respect to Compliance and Security Policies.
  • Seeks assistance as needed to implement procedures to secure all data for the organization.
  • Has good communications skills via all media and provides exceptional customer service to Business Stakeholders, Application Owners and other members of the IT organization.
