Are you looking for an opportunity to use your background in business or customer service to improve both local and state government for our business community? Do you want to work closely with business owners, tax preparers and community partners on work that helps grow the economy of our state? The Business Tax Section within the Taxpayer Services Division at the Vermont Department of Taxes seeks qualified, customer centered individuals to provide outstanding support and education to our business taxpayers.


This position will work closely with taxpayers, as individuals or businesses and their representatives and paid preparers to help ensure they understand and comply with their statutory requirements in relation to Sales & Use, Melas & Rooms, and employer Withholding Taxes. They will provide support for new tax account registrations and return filings using the department's electronic filing system myVTax. The position will report directly to the Business Tax Section Chief and will work closely with their peers and can expect to interact with the Division Director and Assistant Director when needed.


Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Providing training, education, and support to Businesses, Tax Preparers and the public on the Vermont trust taxes via telephone, email and in person.
  • Utilize VTax, the Department's electronic tax management system to process tax return filings.
  • Support Vermont Business Taxpayers and preparers using myVTax, with log in, registration and electronic filing .

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in, accounting, business and/or customer service
  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds.
  • Ability to respond to taxpayer's needs, via phone, email or in person.
  • A desire to continue to learn and grow.

This is a full-time, hybrid position with the ability to telework four days a week from home once the applicant demonstrates the ability and skills needed to work independently. A flexible schedule may also be available with the ability to work four 10-hour days.

Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. * 241.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Workload pressure may vary over time. Some routine data entry may be required in certain positions or for certain periods. Incumbents must be able to concentrate on details and perform accurate work in the face of frequent interruptions. Human relations skills may be needed to deal with the general public. There is regular pressure from continual work deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or higher AND one (1) year or more of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.

OR

One (1) year or more as a Tax Examiner I.

OR

Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
