PURPOSE OF POSITIONUnder the supervision of the Division Director of Student Life and Wellness, the Mental Health Coordinator supports the expansion of the school-based mental health program and coordinates staff and programming to support students as they learn skills necessary for emotional regulation, distress tolerance and mindfulness, recognize the signs of anxiety, depression and suicide, and have access to appropriate school-based and community services. This position may also be called on to assist with direct crisis services.The Coordinator also functions as a liaison between the SBHC and the school to provide students with the mental health resources needed to help them achieve their academic potential. The Mental Health Counselor collaborates with the Student Support Specialist (social worker), School Counselor, School Nurse, and administration.QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTSMaster's degree in counseling or social work.Valid New Mexico State Independent Counselor or Social Work licensure.Three or more years experience in school counseling and/or related counseling experience.Computer literate with working knowledge of common computer platforms and educational software applications.Basic understanding of Navajo culture and values. The Behavior Intervention Team is an interdepartmental team that utilizes a tiered intervention system to promote holistic student support.Collaborate with academic and residential staff to identify students who need additional emotional or academic support. Maintain excellent documentation of services provided.Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School policies and procedures.Secures and protects the confidentiality of students in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA laws. Follows other legal and ethical standards of the counseling profession.Coordinates school-wide initiatives, activities and workshops.Direct ServicesProvides individual and group counseling, crisis prevention; provide mediation for changes in behavior and conflict resolution.Serves as a consultant and referral resource to the school and families of students needing mental health services.Identifies students at risk for mental health or social issues and develops and implements individual support plans for these students in collaboration with Student Support Specialist.Conducts assessments of such students and provides counseling services or referral to a local mental health provider as indicated.Coordinates prevention efforts that address alcohol and chemical dependency, pregnancy, suicide, dropping out, abuse, tobacco, and other problems.Triage all behavioral health referrals made by NPS staff or parents to determine level of services needed.Provide regularly scheduled group counseling sessions to address behavioral health issues among students.Programmatic DutiesMaintain confidential and accurate record-keeping of coordinated student services across the department.Lead workshops for students, staff, and families to provide resource materials and expertise dealing with issues affecting students, staff, and family.Work with Residential Department staff to develop and implement social emotional wellness programs in the residential setting.Provide regular reporting of programs and activities to supervisor; assist with providing necessary documentation and information for BIE audits.Provide individual counseling to students and make referrals to SBHC or other agency for clinical counseling services, as needed. Accurate documentation of student encounters will be kept according to BIE and FERPA regulations.Assist with New Student Orientation.Participates in orientation/training programs for students, parents, and staff.Certification in CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne PathogensPerforms miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.EVALUATIONPerformance will be evaluated annually by Division Director of Student Life and Wellness
