Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Senior Accountant in our Finance Accounting team.

The Senior Accountant will actively participate in various aspects of the monthly/quarterly close process and other ad-hoc projects as assigned. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal communications skills, solid knowledge of IFRS and GAAP accounting standards, Company's ledger system (e.g. SAP), be able to work independently as well as lead teams, support the maintenance and future configuration of these environments and the affected stakeholders. The Senior Accountant will report to the AVP of Financial Accounting.

What you'll be doing:
  • Prepare and post journal entries for all designated entities, while ensuring adequate supporting documentation is provided. Key areas include cash, fixed assets, accruals, debt, intercompany loans, prepaid expenses, capital contributions/dividends to/from subsidiaries, other assets/liabilities, and various expense related areas
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual Balance Sheet account reconciliations
  • Perform operating intercompany reconciliations/settlements and partner with team members to drive continuous improvements over the intercompany reconciliation and settlement process
  • Perform in-depth G&A fluctuation analysis
  • Perform Balance Sheet and Income Statement monthly variance analysis by entity
  • Oversee claims payment and funding activities for our Third-Party Administrators (TPAs)
  • Monitor and reconcile TPA monthly activity
  • Perform data integrity checks within systems and report/resolve discrepancies promptly
  • Prepare supporting schedules and supplemental reports
  • Continuously drive automation of reporting data
  • Proactively participate in continuous process improvements within the North America Finance team and the broader Global Finance organization
  • Interact daily with the Accounts Payable, Business Services, Financial Planning & Analysis, Technical Accounting, and Treasury departments
  • Assist in project work, including performing testing over system integration data feeds and evaluating data for accuracy, completeness, and classification
  • Actively participate AD Hoc Projects, including accounting policy/procedures documentation and KPI Metrics
  • Proactively leverage systems (SAP, BlackLine, Tagetik) and assist the Financial Accounting team to challenge existing processes
  • Continuously drive change and acceleration of the monthly/quarterly close process
  • Engage and align with key stakeholders to increase awareness of change initiatives
  • Assist with internal/external audit requests and maintain controls documentation
What you'll bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or MIS with business concentration
  • CPA, MBA, and/or Masters in Finance preferred
  • 7+ years' experience supporting software within a large corporate environment
  • Strong awareness of IFRS Accounting Standards and US GAAP
  • Self-motivated and exhibits ability to build strong relationships with management and team members at various levels, both locally and remotely (US, Bermuda & UK)
  • Ability to analyze processes and to develop improvements
  • Detail oriented and logical/disciplined approach to problem solving
  • Can manage work effectively, is flexible and adaptable to a rapid changing environment
  • Demonstrate positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills, should be able to effectively collaborate and interact with others
  • Takes the initiative to improve processes and to resolve problems
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously, prioritize functions, and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrates strong analytical, verbal, written, interpersonal, prioritization, and time management skills
  • Insurance/Reinsurance knowledge preferred
  • Additional working hours are required at peak periods
  • Strong knowledge of SAP General Ledger Accounting System is preferred
  • Experience with a reconciliation/journal tool (i.e., BlackLine) is a plus
  • Advanced proficiency Microsoft Office products (Excel, Access, PowerPoint), including ability to parse and analyze and interpret large data outputs
