The Assistant Director of Clinical Education (ADCE) position is a full-time Respiratory Therapy Faculty position consisting of didactic and clinical teaching duties as assigned within the Respiratory Therapy Program. The ADCE is responsible for direct student instruction in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical sites as assigned. The ADCE is a direct report to the Program Director and assistant to the DCE.

Teaching Duties

  • Performs all duties as listed on the NWACC faculty job description.

  • Attends clinical rotations as assigned.

  • Provides student feedback and maintains records.

  • Performs student evaluation in clinical, laboratory, and classroom.

  • Teaches courses as assigned.

  • Develops simulations as needed.

  • Develops course content, assessments, and formative assignments.

  • Capable of teaching in all formats: online, in-person, in the laboratory, and in clinical.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of each course taught and updates accordingly.

  • Serves a substitute instructor in other respiratory therapy courses when needed.

  • Stays abreast of all courses and subjects taught within the program.

  • Prepares and delivers guest lectures for instructors at NWACC and elsewhere as requested.

  • Performs respiratory therapy procedures competently, within facility policy.

  • Instructs and supervises respiratory therapy students in respiratory therapy procedures at the bedside.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Competent and up-to-date Respiratory Therapy Practitioner

  • Pass a background check and drug screen and maintain immunizations as required by clinical affiliates annually.

  • High patient focus and commitment to continuous process improvement.

  • Be flexible, and possess excellent interpersonal, communication, computer, and organizational skills.

  • American Heart Association, Basic Life Support Provider

  • Supervise and train/instruct RT students to perform the duties of the RRT in clinical practice at various clinical sites.

  • Maintains collegial relationships with external agency partners.

  • Ensure patient safety and adherence to policy and procedures of both NWACC and the clinical affiliate while on site.

  • Evaluates students and provides honest, constructive, feedback.

  • Communicate to the Director of Clinical Education and Program Director on student progress.

  • Input student data using various technologies.

  • Participate in faculty staff meetings and advisory board meetings.

  • Perform the duties of a Registered Respiratory Therapist in all settings, within facility policy.

  • Assists and provides the Program Director with the information needed to maintain accreditation.

  • Assists in the preparation of program self-study documents and participates in accreditation activities.

  • Stays current with Commission on Accreditation in Respiratory Care standards.

  • Assist as needed in the laboratory and classroom.

  • Serve as a mentor, teach/explain/integrate respiratory therapy students into the role of the RRT.

  • Maintains collegial relationships with external agency partners.

  • Assists the Program Director with student recruitment and program marketing.

  • Addresses concerns from staff, students, and faculty as applicable and communicates concerns with the Program Director

  • Collects and verifies student required clinical documentation.

  • Communicates with the Program Director regularly.

  • Maintains office hours in accordance with college policy.

  • Participates in service to the college as required.

  • Serves on the Respiratory Therapy Program Selection Committee

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Rate of Pay: determined by faculty scale placement (education and experience)

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Competent Respiratory Therapist with current RRT credential and appropriate licensure.

  • Should be able to work effectively with employees and all levels of leadership within the institution.

  • Must be proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, learning management systems).

Physical Demands of the Respiratory Therapist

  • Administers respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of cardiopulmonary system, under supervision of physician and by prescription: Reads prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment, such as type and duration of therapy, and medication and dosages.

  • Determines most suitable method of administering inhalants, precautions to be observed, and modifications which may be needed that will be compatible with physician's orders.

  • Sets up and operates devices, such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.

  • Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment, such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients.

  • Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.

  • Performs bronchopulmonary drainage and assists patients in performing breathing exercises.

  • Performs pulmonary function tests to be used by physician in diagnosis of case. Observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy.

  • Consults with physician in event of adverse reactions. Maintains patient's chart that contains pertinent identification and therapy information. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently. Orders repairs when needed. Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health care personnel.

Respiratory Therapy Technical Standards

  • Maintain clinical competence under challenging and sometimes stressful situations.

  • Gather, assess, and interpret data, and respond appropriately to changes in disease signs and symptoms, patient conditions and mental status (i.e., breathing, cardiac, and neurological patterns);

  • Gather data, assess, interpret, and respond appropriately to changes in equipment function/malfunction and safety alarms;

  • Demonstrate manual dexterity;

  • Be able to move and/or reposition patients and equipment;

  • Have a range of motion that allows for reaching hospital equipment such as oxygen administering systems, suction apparatus, electrical outlets, etc.;

  • Perform physical assessment accurately (i.e. auscultation, physical inspection, palpation, etc.)

  • Utilize and monitor sophisticated equipment and technologies;

  • Read analog and digital displays;

  • Respond appropriately to wide range of patient care needs;

  • Communicate effectively and utilize written and spoken English when interacting with patients, their families, and other health care professionals;

  • Record, read, write and interpret data about a patient's condition from charts, radiology screens and computer information systems;

  • Respond to medical emergencies in a timely manner and perform life sustaining procedures appropriately (i.e. cardiopulmonary resuscitation, electrocardiograms, airway management, blood sampling and analysis)

  • Practice universal precautions when interacting with patients and other health care providers;

  • Carry out orders accurately and in a timely manner;

  • Exercise proper clinical and intellectual judgment;

  • Demonstrate professional affective behaviors when interacting with patients, their families, and colleagues;

  • Perform all specific procedural competencies as outlined in the Respiratory Therapy laboratory and clinical course syllabi.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) licensed in Arkansas or eligible for licensure. Must be an active, unrestricted Arkansas respiratory therapy license from the Arkansas State Medical Board

  • A minimum of a baccalaureate degree from a regional or nationally accredited academic institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, 2 years must include clinical respiratory care.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching in an accredited respiratory care program either as an appointed faculty member or as a clinical preceptor

  • Active National Board for Respiratory Care, Registered Respiratory Therapist credential.

  • Experience in educational theory and methodology (curricular design, development, implementation, and evaluation)

  • Experience in instructional design and methodology

  • Experience in student evaluation

  • Knowledge of contemporary respiratory therapy practice

  • Knowledge of contemporary curricular content for the education of the respiratory therapist

  • Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft applications and skilled in the use of information and computer technology (word processing, email, database, PowerPoint) or proven ability to learn these skills.

  • Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession

  • Experience with learning management systems
