OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

Provide leadership to Senior Career Services Specialists team with responsibility for career services to students. Provide institutional expertise within career advising for Master of Public Policy (MPP) students and Undergraduate Public Policy students. Assess constituent needs and interests and develop programs that provide a bridge between academic interests and professional goals. In conjunction with the Assistant Dean, provide expertise and direction for the office's outreach efforts involving alumni and other external constituents and coordinate the delivery of high quality, consistent information to students and alumni. Serve as staff co-leader in the absence of the Assistant Dean.

WORK PERFORMED

A detailed description of functional areas and tasks follows:

  • Manage and supervise Senior Career Services Specialists (25%)
    • Hire, train, manage, supervise and evaluate Senior Career Services Specialists: Director of MPP Career Advising, Director of Global Careers, and Director of Undergraduate Internships.
    • Supervise and coordinate the work of the Senior Career Services Specialists, including setting goals and priorities, ensuring clear communication about deadlines and work products, directing day-to-day operations, and determining the balance of work among team members based on prioritized needs and individuals' strengths.
    • Manage and mentor Senior Career Services Specialists, execute performance reviews, encourage professional development and solicit their input on programs and processes.
  • Provide individual career advising/coaching and resources for MPP students (30%)
    • Advise/coach students on career exploration, internship and job search, networking, negotiations, career change, and other components of their career and professional development.
    • Provide resume, cover letter, other documents, and LinkedIn profile review.
    • Advise/coach student on networking, in collaboration with Career Services team, MPP staff and faculty, and Sanford Alumni team.
    • Design MPP sector and industry handouts, in collaboration with the Career Services team.
    • Approve internships and manage the students' documentation of the successful completion of internships for students in MPP program.
  • Design and deliver career and professional development programming to MPP students (20%)
    • Design and deliver curriculum for PubPol 800 Career and Professional Development graduate course.
    • Supervise Teaching Assistant(s) (TA's) assigned to the course.
    • Design and deliver comprehensive career and professional development programming for MPP students, in collaboration with the Career Services and MPP teams.
    • Research and present public policy career-related resources, including job sites, email lists, and professional programs.
    • Consult with students regularly to determine specific programming needs.
  • Serve as a secondary internship-related career advisor for Undergraduate Public Policy students for time-sensitive matters (10%)
    • Provide time-sensitive individual career advising/coaching and resources for undergraduate public policy students when Director of Undergraduate Internships is not available.
    • Approve time-sensitive internships and manage the students' documentation of the successful completion of internships for undergraduate Public Policy students.
  • Build and maintain professional public policy network (10%)
    • Partner with Director of Employer Relations and MPP and Undergraduate Public Policy teams to build connections and networks with relevant organizations and potential new employers, using Sanford alumni connections and MPP and Public Policy staff and faculty connections.
    • Build Sanford networks within relevant organizations that employ substantial numbers of Sanford and Duke alumni, in collaboration with Sanford Alumni Relations, MPP and Undergraduate Public Policy teams.
    • Attend conferences and networking events that increase the visibility of MPP and Public Policy Undergraduate students to potential employers.
    • Maintain membership/relationships with appropriate professional organizations (e.g., APSIA, NASPAA, NCACE, NCCDA, etc.) and collaborate on events when appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein (5%)

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES

Education/Training

Work requires a master's degree in counseling, student personnel administration or a related field.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 2 years of experience in college or university career services office or directly related experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

In addition the successful candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes:
  • A minimum of 3 years of management of professional staff supervision experience
  • Knowledge of public policy issues and programs.
  • Exceptional management and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent counseling, communication (oral and written), and presentation (face-to-face and virtual) skills.

  • Demonstrated competency to oversee multiple tasks with attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of internal and external constituents including students, employers, alumni, faculty, and staff.

  • Strong ability with time management, event organization, and managing multiple projects and details.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Work requires a master's degree in counseling, student personnel administration or a related field.

Experience

Work requires two years of experience in a college or university career services office or directly related experience.
