Mission/Job Scope:

The Senior Payroll Accountant is responsible for the execution of corporate payroll accounting functions including month-end close which involves preparing journal entries, calculating accruals, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and variance analysis. Additionally, this position is responsible for completing ad hoc requests from internal customers, completing internal/external audit requests, as well as assisting with special projects while driving a service delivery culture focused on customer-centric process excellence. This role is cross-functional and requires collaboration and partnership with a wide variety of teams across the business.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and account analyses as it relates to company payroll, payroll tax, benefits, and bonus plans ensuring compliance with company policy, GAAP, and internal controls while focusing on strategies to reduce the time it takes to close the accounting period.
  • Responsible for tracking, balancing, and troubleshooting all payroll, bonus, benefits, and payroll tax related general ledger entries on a weekly basis.
  • Responsible for coordinating and ensuring all tasks are completed on time.
  • Calculate payroll and bonus accruals.
  • Coordinate with various teams to calculate and submit for approval and payment sales and performance-based bonuses.
  • Manage general ledger and payroll system interfaces.
  • Periodically prepare and present financial reports for senior management.
  • Lead projects requiring research, coordination, organization, communication, and problem resolution.
  • Identify and implement process or system improvements.
  • Provide guidance to payroll team to implement and maintain proper procedures for ensuring compliance with company policy and internal controls.
  • Participate in and support company initiatives such as software implementations, process upgrades and others.
  • Document processes and cross train in other areas in order to provide support during absences.
  • Complete special projects, ad hoc reporting or other general duties as assigned.
  • Prepare supporting documentation for internal and external audit requests related to payroll, payroll tax returns, benefits, and bonus plans
Essential Competencies:
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Effective verbal and written communications, including active listening skills, problem-solving skills and presentation skills.
  • Ability to proactively seek out others within the organization to resolve issues
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required with a minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience a payroll accounting or similar role; public company experience preferred
  • Payroll and payroll tax accounting experience with basic understanding of payroll, 401K and payroll tax processes and calculations highly desired
  • CPA designation or CPA candidate preferred
  • Foundational knowledge of accounting principles and practices and the analysis and reporting of financial data
  • Proficient with corporate accounting processes including preparing journal entries, account reconciliations and account analysis
  • Experience with financial systems and tools (e.g., JDA, Workday Adaptive, Blackline UKG payroll, MS Access) a plus
  • Above average knowledge of Excel with the ability to visually interpret the logic of a complex sequence of excel formulas and update or change these as needed
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with key business partners
  • Must have excellent work habits, including a commitment to work the hours necessary to get the job done, especially during period close and reporting cycles
  • High ethical standards and the ability to maintain confidential information
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
