POSITION: Investigator

DEPARTMENT: Prosecuting Attorney

WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., M-F

SALARY: $2,346.81 Biweekly

Incumbent serves as Investigator for the Prosecuting Attorney, responsible for investigating and assisting in prosecuting crimes.

DUTIES

:

Conducts/coordinates criminal investigations, traveling as needed, including identifying and locating missing and expert witnesses, missing victims and suspects, interviewing/taking sworn statements, , determining credibility of witnesses, conducting door-to-door investigations surrounding crime scenes, and completing/typing various reports, documents and correspondence as required. Assists law enforcement personnel with specific investigations as requested or as assigned.

Obtains and reviews various case documents, such as arrest, prison and case reports; crime lab reports, slides and photographs; telephone, bank and medical records; E911 tape recordings; criminal histories and outstanding warrants. Maintains confidentiality and security of case information as required.

Obtains/prepares warrants and summonses, determining and writing probable cause affidavits, obtaining necessary signatures, and filing documents with County Clerk as required. Serves subpoenas, civil process papers and warrants/summonses.

Maintains communication with and assists crime witnesses and victims prior to and during trials, including responding to inquiries, scheduling/coordinating conferences, and preparing them for court testimony as needed.

Responds to inquiries regarding specific cases, providing information and copies of documents/reports to various agencies/departments as appropriate.

Assists staff attorneys with trials, including anticipating defense strategies, providing appropriate case information, attending legal proceedings, and corroborating evidence.

Periodically assists with grand jury and confidential investigations as assigned.

Attends training seminars as required.

May serve on 24-hour call as assigned.

Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

High school diploma or GED. Baccalaureate Degree in related area preferred.

Possession of or ability to obtain certifications for law enforcement officer and handgun/firearms training by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) within specified time period. Ability to successfully complete annual ILEA-approved training.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of policies, procedures, legal requirements and terminology of the department and county justice system. Ability to testify and present evidence in legal proceedings as required.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to type and complete department documents and reports, and maintain confidentiality of information as required.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, crime suspects, witnesses and victims, other law enforcement departments, Child Protective Services, various social service agencies, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to properly operate standard office equipment, including computer, printer, , audio and video recorders, and camera.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of evidence collection and preservation techniques.

Ability to work rapidly for long periods, work on several tasks at the same time, and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.

Working knowledge of universal health precautions and bloodborne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge to protect oneself against infection.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions, and work alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision.

Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend and/or evening hours, and occasionally travel out of town for investigations and training, sometimes overnight.

Ability to serve on 24-hour call and appropriately respond to emergencies from off-duty status.

Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs relatively standardized tasks according to department policies, legal requirements, and accepted criminal investigation procedures, making independent decisions in analyzing evidence and determining charging information, probable causes, and validity of witness/ victim/suspect statements. Incumbent receives general supervision, with work periodically reviewed upon completion. Errors in decisions or work may not be readily detected through supervisory review and may jeopardize criminal cases in court.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains communication with co-workers, other County departments, crime suspects, witnesses and victims, other law enforcement departments, Child Protective Services, various social service agencies, and the public, for purposes of exchanging and explaining information, coordinating activities, and resolving problems.

Incumbent reports directly to Chief Investigator.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs a majority of duties in a standard office environment, with some duties performed at/around major crime scenes, in a courtroom, and driving a vehicle. Incumbent's duties may involve sitting for long periods, sitting and walking at will, close vision, hearing sounds/ communication, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, and exposure to disturbing evidence, distraught and/or potentially violent/hostile individuals. Incumbent may occasionally be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, for which universal health precautions must be followed to prevent infection.

Incumbent occasionally works extended, weekend and/or evening hours, and occasionally travels out of town for investigations and training, sometimes overnight. #J-18808-Ljbffr
