The Student Success Specialist assists students with academic advisement, transfer, referrals and provides information regarding academic standards. Oversees, coordinates, and advises on the Math, Science, Information Technology and Bachelor Programs associated with student success within a major. Implements programs and initiatives with defined recruitment, retention, persistence, and graduation outcomes. Assists the Academic Coach and department chair with class schedules; monitors student enrollment and degree plans (substitutions, registration, overloads); and organizes student events for the program. Provides a variety of student support services such as recruitment, placement testing, financial aid advising, and academic advisement. Implements strategic and operating plans as appropriate to meet the learning and academic success needs of the Math, Science, Information Technology and Bachelor Programs student population.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provides advisement, degree planning, and case management for students in the Math, Science, and Bachelor Programs.
  2. Tracks and monitors students' progress through case management, including meeting with students monthly to monitor and ensure success.
  3. Registers students in prospective classes.
  4. Generates reports for administration, as needed.
  5. Assists students in the Math, Science, Information Technology and Bachelor Programs with financial aid programs, college admission requirements, and transfer university advisement.
  6. Plans and coordinates orientation for students in the Math, Science, Information Technology and Bachelor Programs.
  7. Assists with recruitment for programs through presentations and correspondence with local area high schools.
  8. Reviews applicants for eligibility and acceptance.
  9. Drafts and sends compliance letters each semester for students in the Math, Science, Information Technology and Bachelor Programs.
  10. Assists with course requests and registration.
  11. Coordinates with Chairs and faculty to process paperwork for courses.
  12. Assists with orientation, recruiting events, and other events.
  13. Assists with degree plans and appeals.
  14. Serves as Campus Security Authority.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
  1. Bachelor's degree required.
  2. At least two (2) years of experience in advising, registration, financial aid, counseling, or student services in a higher education institution, preferred.
  3. Experience in case management, preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  2. Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
  3. Familiarity with college entrance test (TSI).
  4. Familiarity with college transition and admission processes.
  5. Familiarity with degree plans, courses and curriculum.
  6. Knowledge of specific needs for Special Populations.
  7. Knowledgeable in Degree Works and/or other online advisement tools.
  8. Maintains familiarity with the College's programs, policies, procedures and academic standards.
  9. Bilingual, English/Spanish, preferred.
  10. Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
  11. Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
  12. Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
  13. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  15. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret higher education degree plans.
  16. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  17. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
