Living Laboratory Mentor Internship - Collegiate

Museum of Science, Boston

www.mos.org

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

This internship experience is offered through the Research & Development department, in the Museum's Exhibits, Research, and Collections division.

The Research & Development department integrates current science research topics into the museum experience by conducting studies to better understand how people learn when they visit science museums, and by applying what we learn in these studies to create fun, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences for people of all ages. Staff in this department contribute to the creation and evaluation of new exhibits, programs, or online resources across a variety of science topics.

The Research & Development department also oversees the Museum's Living Laboratory initiative, in which museum staff collaborate with scientists from across Greater Boston to offer museum guests the opportunity to participate in cognitive and behavioral science research studies as part of their museum visit. Through Living Laboratory, the department offers professional development that supports our research collaborators to communicate their research methods and findings to the public in effective and meaningful ways.

The department oversees a robust work-based training program to familiarize high school students with informal STEM learning and research practices-in collaboration with staff from the Museum's Content Development and Research & Evaluation teams, the program provides year-round, mentored work experiences for ~20 teen-aged staff and interns annually

The intern will be involved in creating and testing hands-on educational prototypes with visitors, recruiting and collecting data from Museum visitors, and supporting staff to disseminate research findings with professional and public audiences. The intern will work closely with a team of research, development, evaluation, and education professionals dedicated to creating fun and engaging exhibit-based science learning experiences for the public.

  • Assist with the integration of human subjects research in the Museum experience by engaging in daily conversations with Living Laboratory research volunteers, developing educational materials (e.g., handouts describing research studies), and providing logistical support (e.g., maintaining spaces, tracking engagement data).
  • Assist full-time staff to provide training in science communication and science education practices to youth staff and interns, under mentorship from staff in Exhibits, Research, and Collections
