EMS/Stroke Coordinator - Mary Immaculate Hospital

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Stroke Coordinator ensures quality, timeliness and effectiveness of neuroscience care delivery and is responsible for professional program activities, assessment, planning, organizing, implementation, performance improvement, education, stroke program hospital services utilization, community outreach, pre-hospital education, and marketing/ communications. The Stroke Coordinator works in a multidisciplinary role to promote quality in clinical practice for a specific patient population with the goal of providing superior quality, competitive value and outstanding service to patients, families, and the community.

Helps assess, plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate regional emergency preparedness efforts.

Responsible for planning, organizing, and evaluating pre-hospital care activities for Mary Immaculate Hospital (MIH). Serves as a liaison between pre-hospital care providers, EMS students and the emergency department staff. Represents MIH emergency departments on internal and external committees involving pre-hospital care. Promotes quality pre-hospital and emergency care by being a role model and resource person to pre-hospital and emergency department staff. Coordinates instructional/educational activity for the EMS community. Keeps abreast of EMS protocols, policies, and laws.

Maintains confidentiality.

Licensing/Certification

EMT-P, EMT-Paramedic, or Registered Nurse

ACLS, PALS, BLS

Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP)/Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP) preferred

Instructor status a plus

Education

2 years/Associates Degree in Emergency Management/Law Enforcement, Vocational/Technical Degree in Fire Service or Accredited Nursing School

Work Experience

Exposure to critical care and/or acute care of stroke preferred.

Field paramedic experience (5 years preferred).

Registered Nurse with critical care experience (2 years preferred).

Training

Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills to drive program improvement and relationships.

Must be able to multi-task and handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Completion of NIMS courses, FRAME course, HERT/TERT training required.

Proficient with different computer applications.

Essential Job Functions
  • Maintains open communication with EMS agencies serving as the conduit between the ED and the EMS agencies.
  • Provides EMS education including scheduling of paramedic students.
  • Represents the west market at regional EMS Coordinator meetings.
  • Routinely rounds on EMS agencies within the market.
  • Plans and executes activities for EMS week/keeps EMS room supplied.
  • Solicits and responds promptly to EMS follow ups.
  • Maintains and expands current knowledge base related to EMS.
  • Responsible for follow up on EMS blood born exposures.
  • Works closely with the ED staff to resolve issues between the ED and EMS.
  • Assists with emergency preparedness efforts, e.g., policies/procedures, training, report writing and attending local, state, and regional meetings.
  • Assists with program issues.
  • Provides input to managers and other staff on Emergency Management issues.
  • Serves as role model/resource person.
  • Chairs/Serves on committees as assigned.
  • Recognizes and reports potential safety issues.
  • Demonstrates teaching skills and classroom management skills.
  • Supports and contributes to organizational cost saving initiatives.
  • Maintains effective communications.
  • Maintains a current working knowledge of neuroscience patient care and works with nursing leadership to maintain quality levels of neuro/ stroke care.
  • In conjunction with the Nursing Leadership coordinates all stroke specific survey or accreditations efforts with a goal of attainment of Primary Stroke Center status.
  • Coordinates all data management activities, including Stroke Registry data entry and neuro/ stroke care monitors.
  • Evaluates the relevance of current research-based knowledge as it pertains to identify practice problems, alternative solutions, or proposed innovations.
  • Develops, coordinates, and maintains stroke program policies and procedures.
  • Co-Chairs Stroke Committee and actively participates in the BSMH System's stroke projects and efforts.
  • In conjunction with the Nursing Leadership and Medical Director coordinates Stroke Program Performance Improvement activities and see that they are incorporated with hospital and medical staff performance and improvement processes.
  • Participates in developing, securing approval of, and implementing all neuro/ stroke related nursing standards, policies, and procedures, particularly as they pertain to methods and systems of delivery of care, processes for monitoring quality of care, and evaluation of nursing practice.
  • Works to foster and ensure collaboration between pieces of the continuum of stroke care, including EMS/life flight, emergency care, inpatient services, post-acute services, and ambulatory options.
  • Participates in and encourages associates to participate in activities that benefit the community, including coordinating and providing stroke community education.
  • Facilitates Program CME record for all Medical Staff, and Program members.
  • Attends and facilitates, at minimum, quarterly seminars and education activities for, including but not limited to, physicians, nursing, EMS, and ancillary departments involved in neuroscience patient care, as well as community and media.
