Neuroscience Emergency Coordinator

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Neuroscience Emergency Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the quality, timeliness, and effectiveness of neuroscience care delivery. This role encompasses professional program activities, assessment, planning, organization, implementation, performance improvement, education, utilization of stroke program hospital services, community outreach, pre-hospital education, and marketing/communications. The Coordinator collaborates in a multidisciplinary capacity to promote excellence in clinical practice for a specific patient demographic, aiming to deliver superior quality, competitive value, and outstanding service to patients, families, and the community.

Additionally, this position involves assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating regional emergency preparedness initiatives.

The Coordinator will organize and evaluate pre-hospital care activities for the facility, acting as a liaison between pre-hospital care providers, EMS students, and emergency department staff. This role also represents the emergency department on various internal and external committees focused on pre-hospital care. The Coordinator promotes high-quality pre-hospital and emergency care by serving as a role model and resource for pre-hospital and emergency department personnel. Educational activities for the EMS community will also be coordinated, ensuring up-to-date knowledge of EMS protocols, policies, and regulations.

Licensing/Certification

EMT-P, EMT-Paramedic, or Registered Nurse

ACLS, PALS, BLS

Preferred certifications include Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) or Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP)

Instructor status is a plus

Education

2 years/Associates Degree in Emergency Management/Law Enforcement, Vocational/Technical Degree in Fire Service, or an Accredited Nursing School

Work Experience

Experience in critical care and/or acute care of stroke is preferred.

Field paramedic experience (5 years preferred).

Registered Nurse with critical care experience (2 years preferred).

Training

Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills are essential for driving program improvement and fostering relationships.

Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment is required.

Completion of NIMS courses, FRAME course, and HERT/TERT training is mandatory.

Proficiency with various computer applications is necessary.

Essential Job Functions
  • Facilitates open communication with EMS agencies, serving as the link between the emergency department and EMS providers.
  • Provides EMS education, including scheduling for paramedic students.
  • Represents the organization at regional EMS Coordinator meetings.
  • Conducts regular visits to EMS agencies within the market.
  • Plans and executes activities for EMS week and maintains EMS resource supplies.
  • Solicits and promptly addresses EMS follow-ups.
  • Maintains and expands knowledge related to EMS practices.
  • Responsible for follow-up on EMS bloodborne exposure incidents.
  • Collaborates closely with emergency department staff to resolve issues between the department and EMS.
  • Assists with emergency preparedness initiatives, including policy development, training, report writing, and participation in local, state, and regional meetings.
  • Provides input on Emergency Management issues to management and staff.
  • Serves as a role model and resource for staff.
  • Chairs or participates in assigned committees.
  • Identifies and reports potential safety concerns.
  • Demonstrates effective teaching and classroom management skills.
  • Supports organizational cost-saving initiatives.
  • Maintains effective communication with all stakeholders.
  • Keeps current knowledge of neuroscience patient care and collaborates with nursing leadership to uphold quality standards in neuro/stroke care.
  • Coordinates stroke-specific survey or accreditation efforts with nursing leadership to achieve Primary Stroke Center status.
  • Oversees data management activities, including Stroke Registry data entry and monitoring of neuro/stroke care.
  • Evaluates current research to identify practice problems and propose innovative solutions.
  • Develops and maintains stroke program policies and procedures.
  • Co-Chairs the Stroke Committee and actively engages in system-wide stroke initiatives.
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership and the Medical Director on Stroke Program Performance Improvement activities.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of neuro/stroke nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Fosters collaboration across the continuum of stroke care, including EMS, emergency care, inpatient services, post-acute services, and outpatient options.
  • Encourages community involvement through stroke education initiatives.
  • Facilitates Continuing Medical Education (CME) records for medical staff and program members.
  • Organizes and leads quarterly seminars and educational activities for various stakeholders involved in neuroscience patient care.
