Meter Technician I

Responsible to maintain residential and commercial water meters using automated or manual methods. Ability to troubleshoot meter reading problems and make necessary adjustments. Complete service orders as assigned by Meter Maintenance Foreman or Director. Communicate with customers and the general public occasionally while doing routine maintenance or assisting with collections. Maintain, clean and stock vehicle with necessary parts for meters, MXU, and meter box repairs. Responsible in promoting the District's mission through great customer service and prove we care about our customers and will make every reasonable effort to meet or exceed their expectations. Must perform all job tasks in compliance with GHID safety policies and procedures.
General Qualification Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The requirements of this position provide that the employee work in a safety sensitive manner and should carry out his/her duties as such.
Prior Work Experience: At least one year of job-related prior experience preferred.
Education and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Licenses, Certifications, Etc.: Valid Utah driver's license required.
Background Knowledge:
- Must have strong driving skills; ability to manage tasks and provide good customer service.
- Requires a basic knowledge of the water and wastewater industry.
- Requires a basic knowledge of the District's products and services; basic knowledge of operating policies and procedures.
- Must have the ability to work independently and report the outcomes to the Division Manager or Foreman.
- Must be able to make logical decisions using generally recognized skills and techniques.
- Must be able to provide direct service to the District customers when dealing with meter problems or other matters in a courteous manner.
- Must have communication skills with the ability to communicate with the Meter Maintenance Foreman, Division Manager, Director, and the general public.
- Must be able to function under the direction of others and use common field skills to complete daily work.
- Must be able to rely on policy, written guidance or internal discussions to resolve problems.
- Must have verbal skills to communicate effectively with employees and external business contacts.
- Ability to learn and use radio and handheld meter reading (AMI) components and accurately enter data.
- Ability to kneel, climb a ladder and enter and exit underground vaults.
- Ability to learn GHID geographical area and locate meters by addresses and/or descriptive notes.
- Ability to learn meter locations and open and close meter valves.
- Ability to use hand tools and atmospheric tester.
- Ability to operate and use District's two-way radio device.
- Must have basic skills with general office equipment, computers and computer software.

Overall Effort and Work Location:
- Must be able to withstand occasional periods of moderate physical or mental activity.
- Must be able to work a predictable and consistent schedule. Occasional, but infrequent overtime may be required. Minimal travel for training or other meetings.
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditional and frequently in hazardous traffic conditions. May experience loud noises when driving or reading meters in the field.
- Occasionally may enter vaults and be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. May be required to wear a respirator. In vaults, there are potential risk of electrical shock, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, wet and humid conditions, and work near moving mechanical parts.
