SUMMARY

A senior accountant is responsible for applying accepted accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements, and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures. As part of the Diocesan Shared Accounting Services (DSAS) team, this position will be responsible for helping the DSAS program accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to reconciliations, variance analysis, and financial statement review to ensure timely and accurate monthly reporting. This position will also ensure that the weekly transaction processing of accounts payable, cash receipts, and other journal entries are posted weekly in accordance with the core team's weekly process flow requirements for all entities assigned to their team.

The senior accountant position will supervise three (3) staff accountants with hands-on support in posting payable invoices, processing payments, recording cash receipts, preparing payroll journal entries, preparing bank account reconciliations, and reconciling general ledger accounts. The Senior Accountant role will be responsible for training new staff accountants.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General functions:
  • Verify, allocate, and review general ledger reconciliations and schedules
  • Ensures reports, postings, reconciliations, and payments are processed in accordance with internal controls and procedures and are in line with general accounting principles
  • Periodic review of transaction postings within the general ledger
  • Acts as the subject matter expert (SME) for reconciliation, Balance Sheet review, and weekly core team process
  • Processes more complex journal entries and reconciliations as needed
  • Prepares and executes the completion of the DSAS Financial Library each month end
Other Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serves as backup to the other Senior Accountants for accounting, reporting, processing, and delivery of key reports due.
  • Identifies risks and process improvement opportunities and suggest solutions for improvements
  • Performs special projects as assigned
  • Exhibits excellent customer service acumen and support of team collaboration

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

A bachelor's degree in a business-related field, such as business administration, finance, and/or accounting, and a minimum of four (4) years of general accounting experience are required. Possessing a CPA or actively pursuing one is preferred.

This position requires strong experience in system integrity review and in internal analysis. Important to successfully executing the job duties of this position requires attention to detail; advanced and proficiency in Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Word, PowerPoint, and other Cloud Based Software applications. Expert knowledge of advanced Excel, macros, and pivot tables is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The working hours of this position are not limited to an 8-hour day. This person will need to be available in the evening and weekends, as needed. Must be willing to work in conditions of stress and function well under pressure.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar. Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (15 pounds).
