Accounting Manager

Applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) guidelines in executing, analyzing, verifying, and reporting transactions of a fiscal nature. Advises management regarding the effective use of resources and methods to maximize operational efficiency. Interprets, monitors, and administers policies and procedures to ensure compliance. Interacts with financial services staff to explain accounting policies and procedures and may serve as project leader on special projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to general ledger accounts documenting business transactions. Reviews financial transactions to ensure accordance with GAAP/FASB and applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
- Verifies source documents for accuracy, completeness, authorization, and coding in order to verify general ledger balances, reconcile subsystems to the general ledger, ensure proper internal controls, and identify accounting system problems or weaknesses. Reviews, investigates and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents and reports.
- Reconciles accounts, initiates corrective actions, and formulates and recommends system and process changes through evaluation, analysis of problems, and application of accounting theory.
- Assists with establishing accounting procedures and internal controls to ensure compliance with accounting standards and best practices. Conducts studies and submits recommendations for improving the organization's accounting operation.
- Assists with financial statement preparation and performs year-end adjustments and reporting required for the annual financial statement audit. Annual audit responsibilities include:
- Plant fund accounting, including capitalization and depreciation of College assets
- Allocations of interest, operations and maintenance, and accretion to functional areas
- Pledge accounting, including present value calculations
- Preparation of confirmations of College assets and liabilities
- Compilation of statement of cash flows
- Collects appropriate data and completes appropriate reporting requirements in conjunction with federal, state, local, and private awards, including preparation for the annual A-133 federal funds audit.
- Audits contracts with granting agencies and prepares reports to substantiate final accounting to the granting agencies. Requests cash draw down as appropriate.
- Oversees nonresident alien taxation and ensures compliance with IRS requirements, including the appropriate withholding and reporting of tax on payments to nonresident aliens.
- Supports the financial and administrative functions of subsidiary operations. Duties include:
- Financial statement preparation
- Budget modeling
- Proposals for governmental awards and tax credits
- Other duties as assigned
- Directly supervises the accounts payable process, purchasing activities, sales tax compliance, bank reconciliation and miscellaneous accounting functions, which include the supervision of an accounting assistant and an accounting clerk
- Directly supervises the Accounting Clerk responsible for accounts payable functions of processing invoices/payment vouchers for payment and managing vendor relations, administering the purchase card program, payroll backup, and institutional loan administration.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training; planning and assigning work; appraising performance; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- BA degree in accounting, finance or a business-related field is required.
- Three or more years of management experience.
- Non-profit accounting experience in higher education with CPA certificate is preferred but not required.
- Needs extensive knowledge of computerized financial accounting systems.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to read and write advanced Excel formulas required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to work with people from a diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently and to make decisions based on general guidelines.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills required.
- Sedentary work: involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods-of-time; includes exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or the ability to lift, carry, push or pull or otherwise move objects with a negligible amount of force.
