Responsibilities
  • Maintain a suite of instrumentation for materials synthesis and characterization (e.g. XRD, SEM, etc.)
  • Develop and monitor support systems for instrumentation, such as vacuum pumps and sensors
  • Perform, or schedule with a vendor, periodic maintenance of scientific instruments
  • Work with the data management team to establish a tracking system for instrument maintenance and early detection of instrument failure
  • Work with the Automation team and instrument scientists to establish and document instrument calibration routines
  • Work with the Automation team to assemble custom scientific instruments
  • Work with the Automation team to develop and routinely conduct calibration and verification of trained robot positions as well as programmed positioning of linear actuators and gantries
  • Work with the Science team to operate experiment workflows
  • Assist with execution of calibration routines and instrument operation in general, as needed
  • Analyze, report, and present findings of experiments to the FL97 research team
Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience working with scientific instrumentation, including electronic, vacuum, and chemical-handling equipment
  • Experience with maintenance and safe operation of vacuum instrumentation and lasers
  • Experience with repair of mechanical and electrical components of scientific instruments
  • Experience developing standard operation procedures for scientific instruments
  • Bachelors degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field
  • Strong self-starter and independent thinker, with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying technical information in a clear and thorough manner
  • Eager to work with highly skilled and dynamic teams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and technical setting
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with scanning probe microscopy and/or nanoindentation techniques
  • Experience with experiment automation
  • Experience with computer programming
