The Materials Science and Failure Analysis Section develops solutions for complex materials problems using experimental and analytical methods. We serve government and commercial sponsors across a variety of technical sectors. Objectives of this Role: Perform hands-on experimental and analytical projects in metallurgy/materials science involving failure analysis, applied materials characterization, and materials development/optimization. Use a variety of metallurgical laboratory instruments and techniques for the preparation, characterization and evaluation of different materials. Work as part of a team and independently to develop solutions to address material analysis-related needs of clients. Daily and Monthly Responsibilities: In collaboration with senior staff, perform analytical and experimental work in metallurgical and materials science laboratory spaces. Routinely perform characterizations and analyses using instruments and techniques including scanning electron and light microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Prepare metallographic specimens for analysis using standard laboratory techniques including grinding and polishing, preparation and application of chemical etchants, and microscopic imaging. As necessary, perform troubleshooting on experimental methods and data acquisition instruments. Interface with project team members and clients to develop task scopes and schedules for technical performance of work. Provide regular updates to clients in writing and in person. Requirements: Requires a Bachelors in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering 0 years: Hands-on experience operating a scanning electron microscope and associated EDS chemical analysis equipment. 0 years: Hands-on experience with preparation of metallographic samples, including grinding/polishing, preparation and application of chemical etchants, and microscopic imaging. Must possess strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and effectively communicate complex information. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
