Job Title: Open Rank Professor of Materials Engineering

San José State University invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position in Materials Engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, develop a robust research program engaging undergraduate and graduate students, and participate in shared governance.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach courses, including laboratory courses, graduate courses, and service courses as needed by the department.
  • Develop a research program that incorporates undergraduate and M.S. students.
  • Submit grant proposals and manuscripts to peer-reviewed research journals.
  • Participate in shared governance, including department, college, and university committees, and other service assignments such as advising, assessment, and lab coordination.
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Materials Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • A record of or strong potential for scholarly agenda and teaching effectiveness appropriate to the candidate's academic rank and area of expertise.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • B.S. or M.S. in Materials Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
  • Postdoctoral experience in academia or industry.
  • Research interest and experience in Computational Materials Engineering, including Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning applications, Quantum computing, Semiconductor and electronic materials, etc.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate research students.
  • Experience adapting teaching methods to a variety of learning environments, including online instruction.
