The Robert C. Byrd Clinic, on the campus of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, is seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON).

Position Purpose:

This position is accountable for ensuring the highest possible level of patient care and adheres to regulations and best practices regarding sanitation, infection control and patient privacy. This is accomplished through frequent rounding, providing regular education, orienting and training new hires, and assisting on the floor with patient care. The ADON will work closely with the Director of Nursing to assess, review, develop, and implement nursing activities that will assist in the growth and development of staff to aid in the efficiency of patient flow, as well as enhance the patient's experience.

Position Qualifications:

Graduate of an accredited RN program. BSN preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and payer regulations and requirements related to nursing including patient safety, infection control and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance/performance improvement, risk management, utilization management and outcomes management standards.
Skills:
  • Skilled in time management and prioritizing work.
  • Skilled in the human resource management of staff from recruitment through evaluation and termination.
  • Skilled in utilizing computerized systems to gather data, analyze results and make recommendations.
  • Skilled in developing/monitoring budgets and maintain cost-effective nursing practices.
Abilities:
  • Ability to analyze data, problem solve and make decisions related to nursing issues.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels and departments about nursing topics.
  • Ability to make presentations before top management, public groups, Board of Directors and staff.
  • Ability to collaborate with senior leaders to improve clinical operations.
  • Ability to competently use Athenahealth EHR, Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software systems such as ADP, MCN Policy Manager, etc.
Experience:
  • Minimum five years of nursing experience.
  • Prefer experience in a clinic setting similar to RCBC.
  • Prefer experience with progressively increasing management/operations responsibilities.
Licenses/Certifications: Valid West Virginia RN license; Current BLS certification.

Reports to: Director of Nursing

Supervises: Pod Leaders/Charge Nurses

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Requirements:
  • Collaborates with the Director of Nursing to assist in planning, budgeting, policy creation and decision making related to clinical operations involving nursing staff.
  • Clearly communicates, implements, and monitors compliance of current nursing policies and procedures, and holds staff accountable when staff deviate from the process.
  • Maintains close coordination with all departments to ensure continuity and collaboration of services to streamline patient workflow.
  • Assures the performance in all aspects of patient care occurs in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical errors.
  • Ensures all staff are trained in, and diligently works toward, Quality Assurance/ Performance Improvement requirements.
  • Assesses nursing practice as it relates to fiscal responsibilities such as supplies, equipment repair and replacement, and overtime. Continuously monitors for opportunities to reduce expenses.
  • Works with human resources, pod leaders/charge nurses to recruit, select, orient and train new staff.
  • Collaborates with medical staff, consultants, community agencies and institutions to improve the quality of nursing services and resolve identified problems.
  • Collaborates with other RCBC leaders in developing, implementing, reviewing, revising, and monitoring clinic-wide performance improvement activities.
  • Participates in meetings to help develop positive changes throughout the clinic.
  • Stays current with federal, state and payer regulations and requirements and updates professional standards for nursing as appropriate.
  • Monitors areas for infection and prevention control, including staff compliance.
  • Provides staff education on a regular basis, including but not limited to competencies at hire and annually.
  • Regularly works shifts in each area to assess and evaluate workflows. Looks for ways to improve efficiency and patient throughput by standardizing processes where applicable.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including federal, state, local regulations, and accrediting organization standards.
  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Wears identification while on duty.
  • Attends annual review and performs departmental inservices.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, providers, departments and staff.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Attends committee and leadership meetings as appropriate.
  • Resolves staff concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the appropriate human resources processes.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control.
  • Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directives to staff and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of RCBC, as well as the departmental goals.
