Key Responsibilities The Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art (AAA) seeks anexperienced and creative candidate to fill the role of AssociateDirector for Advancement. Working closely with the Director, seniorstaff, and members of the Board of Trustees, the Associate Directoroversees all fundraising at the AAA, including foundation grants,major gifts, annual fund, and cultivation events. Theincumbent manages relationships with current and prospectivedonors, including identifying, cultivating, soliciting, andstewarding donors. Regular direct interaction with donors andpotential donors nationwide is expected, and direct, independentsolicitation of gifts from individuals and institutional donors isa central aspect of the position. The Associate Director develops and manages activity for theportfolio of prospects ranging from major gifts to principal giftsand on an annual and long-term basis for general operating supportand programmatic initiatives as well as endowments. The incumbentseeks opportunities to expand the portfolio and increase givingfrom current donors. The Associate Director develops and implementsthe AAA’s communications and marketing strategy and supportingcampaigns to raise the visibility and to elevate the brand of theArchives of American Art in alignment with generating support forfundraising priorities. The Associate Director is responsible for planning and oversightof the annual gala, a formal dinner for approximately 300 peoplewith honorees and an awards program, including developing andimplementing a plan to engage board members and other keystakeholders in soliciting support for this event and/or equivalentevents. The Associate Director develops and manages othercultivation events that may be developed through the year, workingin collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution’s Office ofSpecial Events and Protocol as needed. The Associate Director isresponsible for effective budget management, working incollaboration with the AAA’s Director for Administration. Theincumbent supervises three advancement staff whose primary dutiesare in external communications, grant and gift management,individual giving, and annual fund. This position reports to theDirector of the AAA. Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise Successful candidates will have a minimum of seven years ofsuccessful experience in fundraising with increasing level ofresponsibility. At least five years of experience in directsolicitation of major gifts, including principal gifts ispreferred. Strong organizational, relationship, collaboration,communication, project management, and supervisory skills as wellas the ability to work independently are essential. Abachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is highlydesirable. Travel is required and work during the evening andweekends may be necessary.
