POSITION SUMMARY

Grants Accountant will be responsible for the management and submission of contract billings and the collection of government contract receivables in accordance with grantor and agency guidelines. The Grants Accountant will be timely and accurate in their preparation and submission of vouchers, compliance reports, and revenue recordings. This position requires both critical and analytical thinking in order to ensure the achievement of team and organizational goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures the accounting necessary to support sponsored program activity is in compliance with government, sponsoring agency
  • Prepares and analyzes financial reports and sends to controllers, program directors, and the sponsoring agencies
  • Prepare and distribute periodic invoices.
  • Assists the Controller with the review of all award proposals for propriety prior to submission
  • Utilize accounting software (ex: Abila MIP Fund Accounting)
  • Maintain and update accounting records and files
  • Maintain accurate record of Fund Balances
  • Inspect account books for efficiency and accuracy
  • Perform federal, state, and Local grant closeout functions, reconciliation's, financial status reports, final invoices, zeroing out budgets, final reporting and, where permitted, carryover of available funds.
  • Prepare financial projections for RFPs, RFQs, and subcontracts
  • Provide technical guidance and review the work of the Accounting Clerk
  • Recommend journal entries to the Controller
  • Prepare management (financials) and reports with analysis as needed
  • Knowledge of payroll process (will be cross trained)
  • Apply new accounting policies and ensure compliance with rules and regulations
  • Keep CFO well-informed of activities, pending issues, and potential problems

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications:

  • Experience with Excel (advanced)
  • Experience with AP, AR life cycle
  • Proficiency in 10-key
  • Great organizational skills
  • Responsible for compliance with all applicable federal, state, municipal laws, statues, or ordinances
  • A self-starter who can work independently and as a team member; who consistently demonstrates professionalism, courtesy, efficiency, excellent internal and external customer service, high ethical standards and behavior that contributes to harmonious relationships
  • Demonstrated ability or willingness to work with culturally diverse populations, youth, and professionals
  • GAAP Experience

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or related experience considered
  • 5+ years of accounting experience required, non-profit preferred

Confidentiality:

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client and personnel information adhering to HIPPA, professional codes of conduct, State of CA regulations, Privacy Act, and UAII policies and procedures
  • This position has access to sensitive information, and a breach in confidentiality will be grounds for disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination

Communication/ Interpersonal skills:

  • Possess the ability to communicate with others in a courteous and professional manner
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in English

Technology skills:

  • Willingness to learn new skills and participate in training sessions relevant to the position
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Accounting Software (MIP preferred)

Other:

  • Demonstrate ability to exercise a high level of judgment, accept supervision, and exercise a high level of accuracy and organization
  • Available and willing to travel as needed
  • Available to work evening and weekend hours as needed
  • Accuracy and attention to detail is a must
  • Willingness to learn new skills and participate in training sessions relevant to the position

POSITION PREFERENCES

  • Experience working with the American Indian/Alaskan Native community
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations, community groups and performance-based government contracts.
  • Knowledge of Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (Public Law 93-638)

The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds. specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. talking and hearing are essential to communicate with staff and vendors.

There are several deadlines associated with this position. the employee must also multi-task and interact with various people on various and, at times, complex issues.
