Nature of Work
The City of Everett Animal Shelter is currently accepting applications for an Animal Shelter Assistant Student Day Laborer. The Student Day Laborer will be actively enrolled in an accredited college and maintains a minimum of nine credits. The Student Day Laborer will work no more than 20 hours per week during the academic year and may work during one off semester or quarter per year between academic enrollments provided that notification by the student is provided in writing and the student was employed during the previous quarter or semester. The hours worked during the off semester or quarter shall not be limited to twenty (20) hours per week provided that the total hours worked in the calendar year shall not exceed 1040 hours. No benefits are provided in this position. A work permit fee of $8.00 per pay period must also be paid to AFSCME Local No. 113.
NATURE OF WORK
This position provides general support work that involves handling and caring for animals brought to the City of Everett Animal Shelter, and the cleaning and routine maintenance of the shelter, including animal housing areas, exam, clinic, and other interior and exterior work areas. Duties may also include assisting in the veterinary clinic, maintenance of records and assisting shelter visitors. Applicants must be 18 years or older.

WORK SCHEDULE
This position is no more than 20 hours per week. The work schedule may be flexible, to include weekdays and/or weekends, typically either mornings as early as 8:30 am to 12:00 pm or afternoons until 5:30 pm.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Feed, care for, and medicate (as directed by the shelter veterinarian and allowed by law) adoptable animals, stray animals, impounded animals, isolated animals, and sick, unruly and aggressive animals, as required.
- Move animals among various areas within the shelter as required in a safe, effective, and humane manner.
- Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, crates, countertops, windows, windowsills, exam rooms, clinic and other work areas.
- Sweep and mop floors, wash dishes, launder animal bedding, take out trash and recycling.
- Assist in the veterinary clinic during surgery and animal exams.
- Restock cleaning and animal care supplies; sort and move deliveries and donated items to designated locations.
- Assist shelter customers by providing information regarding animal adoptions; facilitate prospective adopter and animal meet and greets.
- Depending on experience and skill, administering vaccinations, performing blood draws and microchipping.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
- Dog and cat breeds
- Basic companion animal care, health and behavior
- English grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation
- Attend and comprehend on-the-job training as assigned by management
- Safely and humanely handle animals by adhering to training guidelines and instruction at all times
- Determine sex of animals
- Administer vaccinations, microchips, and oral, nasal and topical medications
- Recognize signs of illness and/or injury in animals and effectively communicate this information to staff
- Operate various types of animal shelter equipment including dish sanitizer and industrial washer and dryer
- Assist shelter and veterinary staff handling animals during exams, treatments, and other medical procedures
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Understand and apply processes and procedures to recurring operational requirements
- Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with supervisors, other employees, volunteers and the general public
- Ability and willingness to maintain a work environment free of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation
- Ability and willingness to be punctual and dependable
- Ability and willingness to work safely and in compliance with city policies and standards
- Maintain confidential information and records
- Requires ability to perform physical labor for extended periods in an indoor and outdoor environment
- Lift and handle objects and animals weighing up to 60 pounds
- Ability to restrain and handle animals up to 100 pounds
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, climb step ladder, bend, reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; feel the size, shape and temperature of items
- Handle unruly, aggressive, and otherwise dangerous animals safely and humanely
- Must be able and willing to work shifts that include at least one day on the weekend and most holidays

Day Laborer positions are not entitled to any benefits (including, but not limited to, vacation, sick leave, or insurance), except as required by applicable law or collective bargaining agreement.
While not members of the AFSCME union, Day Laborers who perform AFSCME work are required to pay a work permit fee of up to $12.00 per pay period.
