Job Description

About the Role

With over 84,000 plants representing about 27,000 taxa, The Huntington is home to one of the largest and most diverse collections of living plants in the world. Our biodiverse living collections provide an opportunity to interpret the wide variety of plant life for educational, conservation, research, and display purposes.

The Huntington is seeking an intern for a 400-hour internship program (approximately 14 weeks). The intern will work for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Botanical interns report to the Collections and Conservation Manager but work under the direct supervision of the Plant Records and GIS Mapping Specialist, performing duties that support staff in maintaining the plant records.

Essential Duties
  • Assist the Plant Records and GIS Mapping Specialist with maintaining plant records in BG Base and in Esri suite (ArcGIS Online & ArcGIS Pro)
  • Assist the Plant Records and GIS Mapping Specialist with producing labels and signage for the living collections
  • Assist the Plant Records and GIS Mapping Specialist with inventorying and/or mapping the living collections using Field Maps application
  • May be asked to perform duties in other areas of the Huntington Botanical Gardens as needed
Other functions

Candidate Requirements and Experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Must be able to learn programs quickly and be able to focus on tasks for long periods of time.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently without constant supervision or be able to work in teams with volunteers or employees.
Experience:
  • Some botanical knowledge required Familiarity with botanical nomenclature standards
Working Conditions
  • Working indoors on a computer for the majority of the day.
  • Occasional forays out to the gardens or greenhouses.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, walk long distances, and lift moderate loads.
