Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence prepares kindergarten-through-5th grade students of Springfield for academic success and engaged citizenship through insistence on rigorous, challenging work. The school incorporates Dr. King's commitment to the highest standards in scholarship, civic participation and the ideal of the beloved community.
Background on MLKCSE
Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence (MLKCSE) is a stand-alone free and public charter school serving 360 students in grades K through 5 in Springfield, Massachusetts. MLKCSE was founded in 2006 and is dedicated to fighting the opportunity gap in Western MA. We are committed to providing each and every one of our students with the quality education they deserve.
MLKCSE is a Title I school. Our MLKCSE students are 28% African American and 64% LatinX. 100% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. 25% of our students are Emerging Bilingual students and 14% of our students have special needs.
Our school is meeting or exceeding targets for most (93%) accountability measures. Overall, our school performs better than 60% of elementary and middle schools statewide at the 61st percentile. MLKCSE is ranked one of the six charter schools in Massachusetts to be meeting more than 75% of the criterion-reference targets. MLKCSE ranked as the 4th highest charter school in the State for our math performance.
The Role
The scope of the responsibilities for Academic Director includes the following:
Plan and Lead Strategically
Lead the development, delivery, and maintenance of the school's academic programs.
Work with the Executive Director to set and ensure that the school's strategic priorities, academic goals, and academic achievement targets are being met.
Collaborate with the Executive Director to clearly define the educational strategy and direction for the school.
Ensure horizontal and vertical alignment of curriculum that lead to MLKCSE's graduate outcomes.
Lead design and planning of Saturday Academy and Summer School.
Assist in defining assessment strategy, data practices, and action planning.
Maintain High Curriculum and Academic Standards
Oversee and make recommendations for curricular updates and enhancements to other academic resources, developing curriculum when necessary.
Ensure academic resources and curricula are strongly aligned with the State/Common Core State Standards and are supported by evidence, (e.g., Science of Reading).
Facilitate collaboration between teams to identify cross-curricular connections between grade-level content areas.
Have a deep understanding of academic content, differentiated instruction, RTI, and other academic tools, assessments, scaffolds, and programs to support curricular coherence and effective implementation.
Plan and Lead Professional Development and Faculty Support
Coach, mentor, and supervise the Deans of Instruction. Lead the Deans of Instruction to set goals for and monitor the continuous improvement of teaching and learning.
Develop, coordinate, and facilitate professional development that impacts leadership and teaching practices and drives academic progress.
Evaluate and coaching faculty.
Advise teachers and administrators on academic issues and initiatives to solve them.
Encourage and empower teachers to make sound instructional decisions and in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals.
Steward Key Community and Organizational Relationships
Meet with parents/guardians/caregivers, students, teachers, and staff to address any concerns regarding academic progress.
Build and maintain partnerships with academic organizations to support school goals.
Facilitate conferences with teachers, parents, and administration regarding academic progress.
Participate in grade level meetings, department meetings, staff development, workshops, programs, and curriculum functions.
Drive Key Academic Operations and Communications
Oversee planning, logistics, and training for standardized testing.
Provide on-going and proactive communication with the school administration and faculty.
Identify proactively, both current and potential academic needs or problem areas
Document all pertinent academic information, and maintain appropriate files and records.
Prepare various academic reports as requested for state and local agencies as well as for funders, the board, and partners.
Maintain confidentiality and discretion.
Update academic-related text in school documents and media (e.g. promotional materials, school website).
Access vendors and manager relationships as necessary to procure educational materials.
Qualifications
Master's Degree in related field of study;
Valid MA Teaching AND Administration license
3 or more years of experience in a direct education supervisory/senior leadership/management role
Valid Driver's License
