Applied Research Associates (ARA) is looking for a Junior Optical Engineer with experience in Infrared (IR) electro-optics to join our Southwest Division’s Space Products Group in Albuquerque, NM. The ideal candidate will be capable of applying Systems Engineering methodologies to the design, analysis, and testing of advanced electro-optical systems. Activities will include modeling and simulation E-O system designs and supporting the technical team. Responsibilities: Specify, select and qualify active and passive optical components. Develop and benchmark system performance models. Develop and implement test procedures. Evaluate and select appropriate test instrumentation. Conduct research and plan for the development and testing of optical and EO systems including LADAR laser systems. Determine calibration and error analysis on test data. Develop and maintain data collection, reduction, and modeling software. Develop and maintain databases of measurements and test results. Support field testing of equipment at government ranges. Junior Optical Engineer Requirements: US citizen with an active DoD Security Clearance or ability to obtain one. BS in Physics minimum, in EE, Math or related field. Strong Systems Engineering background. 3-5 years of experience in the Infrared (IR) field that includes the 2-14 microns regime. Capable in programming languages including Python, MATLAB, or C++. Able to participate in assorted teams, programs, and business areas. Team player with excellent presentation and written/oral communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Ability to understand and solve complex problems. Interest in learning new engineering tools and understanding of all fields of engineering. Junior Optical Engineer Preferences: MS in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field. Experience in at least one of the areas: Field testing of IR systems, Lab calibration of systems, and modeling and simulation of IR systems. Experience in Space Systems. Active DoD SECRET or higher security clearance. Qualifications: Education: Required: Bachelors. Preferred: Bachelors. Experience: Required: 3 years of relevant work experience. Behaviors: Thought Provoking: Capable of making others think deeply on a subject. Dedicated: Devoted to a task or purpose with loyalty or integrity. Team Player: Works well as a member of a group.
