Senior Technical Reporting Accountant (Senior Technical Accounting Analyst)

Primary Job Purpose

This position is primarily responsible for research and review of all of the Company's technical GAAP and Statutory financial statement reporting positions. This role also is responsible to ensure all external filings and reports are technically consistent, as well as, monitoring current updates in GAAP and Statutory regulations and presenting these updates to the finance leadership team.

General Functions and Outcomes

  • Monitor the activities of all accounting and insurance industry standard setting bodies, i.e. FASB, SEC, AICPA, EITF, NAIC, BCBSA, etc. and evaluate the impact of new pronouncements on the Company financial statements (both Statutory and GAAP).

  • Draft and/or review accounting white papers, position papers, and the Company's position around technical accounting topics.

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate research of technical accounting issues related to the Company and discussions with its outside auditors regarding the company's evaluation of technically complex transactions.

  • Provide technical accounting support to Company's business units in their assessment of accounting issues.

  • Monitor and update corporate accounting policies.

  • Participate in external reporting and ensure public disclosure is complete and accurate.

  • Consult with independent auditors on accounting matters and disclosure requirements as required.

  • Participate in accounting due diligence and assist with M&A implementation and integration activities, including purchase accounting, fair value assessments, and related processes.

  • Present GAAP and Statutory updates to accounting personnel and finance leadership.

  • Assist with various special projects and supporting other Finance Department functions as necessary.

  • Bring new fresh ideas and knowledge of accounting best practices and latest industry trends and assist in implementation of these.

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience in researching and developing technical accounting procedures and positions in response to complex accounting issues, with the ability to draft position papers, suggest policy actions, and otherwise provide formal written guidance to management regarding those issues.

  • Strong technical accounting skills, with the ability to constructively combine accounting rules with real life business objectives.

  • Proven leadership abilities as demonstrated by successfully managing projects, leading cross-functional teams, training, and process improvement.

  • Demonstrated ability to think analytically and to apply analytical techniques to provide in-depth analysis and recommendations using critical thinking and sound judgment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of management both as a starter and in a team environment, with skills at presentations and project management.

  • Above average ability to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing, with all levels of the work force.

  • Ability to effectively and comfortably cope with a variety of ad-hoc projects at the same time while being able to command and maintain composure and good judgment throughout the analysis process.

  • Based on level of expertise, demonstrated application of in-depth financial, actuarial, accounting, and business knowledge.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize own work, projects, and the work of others in the department with minimal supervision.

Normally to be proficient in the competencies listed above:

Senior Technical Accounting Analyst would have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field and 7+ years of demonstrated financial reporting, accounting, and accounting research experience.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registration, Etc.

  • Must be a licensed CPA.
  • CMA, MBA, or Masters of Accounting, along with health insurance industry experience preferred.

Work Environment

  • No unusual working conditions.
  • Work primarily performed in remote environment.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • May be required to work outside normal hours.
