Deputy Campus Fire Marshal (DCFM) acts on behalf of OSFM to do specialized plan review and field enforcement work; consults with fire officials, architects, engineers, contractors, principal investigators, academic department chairs, chemists, industrial hygienists, and campus staff on problems of hazardous materials, fire and panic safety in the design, construction, and operation of buildings and facilities at UCSF. This position will guide subordinate staff in providing support to construction projects as well as general fire and life safety inspections; cooperates with public agencies on mutual challenges relating to fire safety and hazardous materials; communicate hazardous materials storage and use requirements to internal stakeholders and end users; assist principle investigators with strategies for compliance; reviews reports and recommendations of field inspectors and prepares letters of instruction and recommendation to operators and principal investigators; conducts training meetings for field personnel; maintains records of plan reviews and inspections made; supervises personnel in following up enforcement of laws and regulations of the OSFM; trains new personnel on inspection work and enforcement and evaluates their performance; makes special field inspections with personnel in unusual or controversial problems. Receives assignments in the form of broad objectives, and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Proactively assesses fire and life safety risks, and proposes, develops, and oversees implementation of policies and procedures to assure awareness of and compliance with UCSF and regulatory requirements.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

**Department Description**
- The UCSF Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) provides safety and compliance guidance to all UCSF operations and facilities, including activities across both the Campus and the Health System. Under formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), EH&S Fire and Life Safety Team staff perform plan review, construction inspections, existing building inspections and other work on behalf of OSFM and OSHPD, providing reviews and code enforcement on behalf of the agencies. Other EH&S staff provide expert consultation and other services related to biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety, workplace safety and ergonomics, industrial hygiene, environmental protection and spill response. EH&S reports ultimately to the Chancellor, through the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research/Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost.

**Required Qualifications**
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Toxicology, Biosciences, Engineering or related area and 5+ years of directly related work experience; / or equivalent experience / training
- Advanced or expert knowledge / understanding of broad range of EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment
- Advanced skill to effectively represent the organization to state and federal authorities, and community groups
- Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints
- Advanced skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff
- Advanced skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required

- Registered Professional Engineering or Certified Industrial Hygienist
- CA Fire Service Training & Education System Fire Inspector I and II or equivalent
- CA Fire Service Training & Education System Plan Reviewer or equivalent
