**GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK**:
Performs administrative and supervisory work in receiving, recording, maintaining and disposal of property and evidence for the Police Department in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines. Adheres to accreditation standards regarding property and evidence. Position reports to the Forensic Services Manager.

**Essential Functions**:
**TYPICAL FUNCTIONS**:
Supervises and coordinates the activities of the Property and Evidence Unit;
Supervises and evaluates Evidence Unit personnel;
Plans, schedules, evaluates, and counsels Evidence Unit staff on work performance to ensure compliance with department policies and procedures;
Plans and evaluates operating procedures and practices of Evidence Unit;
Supervises and handles the receipt, storage and disposition of any evidence and found or recovered property;
Trains Evidence Unit personnel and coordinates orientation training for new employees;
Prepares administrative reports and all other necessary correspondences, policies and procedures updates;
Assists in the budget process by forecasting funding needs for equipment, supplies and training for the Evidence Unit;
**RELATED TASKS**:
Testifies in court;
Performs related duties as required.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; thorough knowledge of all aspects of the Forensic Services Unit as it pertains to evidence packaging and collection. Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and accreditation standards as it applies to the Property and Evidence Section. Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures employed in the receipt, storage, release and disposal of evidence and property. Ability to plan, implement and monitor an effective property control system. Needs working knowledge of modern computer systems and general office equipment. Ability to effectively represent the Police Department in contacts with other departments, law enforcement and criminal justice agencies and the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, representatives of other agencies and the general public. Knowledge of supervisory methods and practices. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

**Minimum and Preferred Qualifications**:
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with course work in criminal justice, administration of justice, evidence management, evidence collection/processing, or police science, and six (6) years of experience as a full-time Property and Evidence Custodian for a recognized law enforcement agency. Supervisory experience preferred.

**CERTIFICATIONS / PROFESSIONAL LICENSES**:
Possess and maintain valid certification as Property and Evidence Specialist from the International Association for Property and Evidence, or possess an equivalent certification, or the ability to become certified within 1 year.

**SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS**

Possession of a valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in the last three (3) years.
The applicant must successfully pass a complete background investigation to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.
