Waste Water Treatment Plant and Air Scrubber

**Definition**
Under general supervision, those in this position shall perform a variety of duties in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant, air scrubber and related facilities. As well as, mechanical equipment and systems involved in wastewater treatment, air scrubbing and associated processes.
**Examples of Duties, Knowledge, and Abilities**
In the course of performing the duties in this position, incumbents refer to laws, regulations and guidelines such as (1) safety regulations and requirements from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Sunlit Arizona’s policies; (2) Federal and State pollution regulations; (3) operations and maintenance manuals; (4) City of Phoenix waste water treatment permit; and (5) Sunlit Arizona’s procedures, manuals, work orders and job plans.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operates plant equipment systems, to include making equipment and process adjustments, locally, remotely, and through the plant computer control system in accordance with plant procedures.
- Inspects, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs equipment and systems involved in the wastewater treatment, air scrubbing and associated processes to include performing the following:
- Manage scheduled maintenance and operations checks of wastewater treatment, air scrubber, and associated equipment including scheduled lubrication, and cleaning
- Inspecting, removing, repairing, and installing mechanical equipment of average difficulty such as pumps, motors, hydraulic drives, chemical handling systems, and related components
- Removing, repairing and installing hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanically operated valves
- Assisting in the repair of mechanical equipment
- Removing and installing electronic and mechanical flow measuring devices, electric motors, etc.
- Checking and evaluating the status of equipment and control systems for abnormalities, inefficiencies, unsafe conditions, etc.
- Reporting potential or actual problems and making recommendations as to appropriate action
- Removing and isolating equipment, to include bypassing downed systems to keep the process on line or preparing for plant wide shutdowns for maintenance and repair
- Returning plant equipment and processes to operating status following shutdowns, power outages, etc.
- Calibrating chemical analyzers
- Performs one or more of the following duties:
- Keeps work records and prepares reports
- Collects wastewater samples and records results
- Operates mobile equipment such as forklifts, lifts, cranes, etc.
- Operates small wastewater treatment plant and air scrubber equipment under minimum supervision
- Leads vendor crews in performing routine repair and maintenance
- Enters, maintains, and extracts information from various computer software programs such as the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and work order system
- Serves on an Emergency Response Team
- Performs general clean-up of tools, equipment and areas
- Performs related duties as assigned
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
- Principles of wastewater, water reclamation, air scrubbing, and related treatment processes in order to recognize the interrelationship of processes, to start and stop systems and equipment, and to understand the functions of various gauges, meters, and controllers
- Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and operation of mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, gearboxes, mechanical hydraulic drive systems, compressors, electronic, pneumatically and hydraulically controlled valves, chemical handling, and associated equipment
- Principles of operation of pumps, motors, valves, and associated equipment
- Pertinent Federal and state laws
egulations pertaining to wastewater treatment and air scrubbing including a knowledge of what constitutes a violation, etc.
- Mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology
- Basic electrical/electronics circuitry
- Safety regulations, practices and procedures
- First aid and CPR
- Wastewater sampling and testing procedures
Ability to:
- Inspect, troubleshoot, operate and maintain all process areas of the wastewater treatment plant
- Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain and repair mechanical equipment and systems involved in wastewater treatment and associated processes
- Perform plant control tests
- Keep work records and prepare reports
- Use a variety of hand, precision, and power tools
- Drive a variety of mobile equipment such as forklifts, lifts, and cranes.
- Read, interpret and utilize plant diagrams, manufacturer's specifications, operations manuals, piping schematics, etc.

- Use computer equipment and related peripheral equipment to enter, maintain and extract information
