South Portland Middle School

South Portland, United States Goodwill NNE AmeriCorps Full time

-South Portland Middle School, newly constructed last fall, is entering its second year to serve the racially, economically, and linguistically diverse 5th-8th grade students of our city. We are looking for five AmeriCorps members to join our team as Restorative Justice Fellows to support the social-emotional needs of our students. South Portland Middle School is a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) school, which means we clearly teach our shared expectations to all students (safe, respectful, responsible, and kind); reward students who follow those expectations (think: Popcorn Fridays Field Days); and put support plans into place for students who struggle to meet expectations. In addition, we are a Restorative Justice and Trauma-Informed Practices school and focus on teaching students how to engage positively and responsibly with their peers and the school community. Our Restorative Justice Fellows team will work collaboratively to bring the values of PBIS, restorative justice, and trauma-informed practices to life through their interactions with students, program development, and conflict resolution work. They will receive support, training, and supervision from our administrative team and work collaboratively with teachers to support students. In addition, there are many opportunities to run after school enrichment programs that align with members’ interests. We are looking for collaborative, student-centered Fellows for this innovative new program. This is a great opportunity to learn about and support diverse public schools, so bring your friends to South Portland, Maine and come work at our new school

We are seeking to create a core of five Restorative Justice Fellows, each one assigned to a classroom wing to help with our goal of promoting positive connections and culture in their assigned wing using the tenets of Restorative Justice practices. Each Fellow will be located right in the middle of the classroom wing and will support students as they work through Restorative Practices such as conflict mediation, self-reflection, and restorative conversations with peers or staff. They will be a friendly guide if a student needs help or support and help students transition between classes positively and efficiently. They will help students in the hall who are working on classroom projects, and support students individually through conversation and shared activities. They will also manage the Check In, Check Out (CICO) plans (positive behavior support plans) for the students on CICO on that hallway.
