Job Description Summary

The graduate coordinator works closely with the Graduate Group Chair to design, implement and maintain effective methods of managing the Graduate Program in Anthropology at Penn. This position also reports to and meets with the Department Administrator with respect to Department duties, events, and staff related obligations. The coordinator oversees all phases of the Graduate Program including pre-admissions, admissions, coursework, examinations, funding and graduation by advising students. In addition, the coordinator identifies, communicates and problem solves all related issues between students, faculty and administration, as well as organizes some event planning such as the prospective student visit and orientation.

**Job Description**:
Anthropology is the study of humans, past and present. In the Penn Anthropology Department, our individual research topics engage a range of contemporary issues, including corporations and finance, media and communication, migration and demographics, science and technology, health and environment, heritage and identity, race and gender, violence and social control, poverty and rights, and political and economic development. This research informs the courses we teach. Anthropology is the involved social science. It is scientifically rooted and actively engaged. It moves with the times. It makes a difference.

Job Responsibilities- Advise graduate students on academic programs and provide support with course registration and curriculum planning.- Assist in coordinating hiring for graduate students and other logistics. Have a good understanding of the protocol surrounding personnel actions.- Administrative Support to Graduate Chair and Department Administrator. Assist with tracking deadlines, coordinating travel, as necessary.- Serve as liaison between Anthropology Graduate Chair, students, the Graduate Division office and the Office of International programs and University.- Assist international students with forms, letters, visas, housing, OIP and Federal requirements.- Assist the Department Administrator in the distribution and development of relevant graduate content for department website.- Manage the Graduate curriculum and support chairs’ overall academic and curriculum planning.- Coordinate MA and PhD exams, set up meeting, appointments, dissertation defenses, process and deposit all forms necessary for awarding degrees.- Admissions: In coordination with graduate chair, manage all aspects of the admissions process for Masters and PhD students. Including organizing student recruitment events.- Tracking: Keep accurate Graduate program statistical data for outward reporting.- Monitor and support student and TA activity.- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

**Qualifications**:
- High School degree with 5-7 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Bachelor's Degree is strongly preferred.- Exceptional ability to calmly and professionally execute in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.- Excellent organizational skills including previous experience with small and large scale event planning.- Ability to set and adjust priorities, learn new information quickly, be proactive and take initiative in problem solving while knowing when to delegate.- Ability to work successfully both independently and as part of a team.- Strong writing, proofreading and professional communication skills.-
