San Mateo County Health's Environmental Health Services Division is seeking a dynamic leader, experienced in Cross Connection Control for water systems, as well as regulation of small drinking water systems and monitoring of bacteria of recreational water, for its **Cross Connection Control Specialist IV **position (Environmental Health Specialist IV).

The current vacancy is a regular position in the Environmental Health Services Division located in San Mateo, CA, but will travel/drive throughout the county to perform the duties of the position.

Under general supervision, the **Cross Connection Control Specialist IV **(Environmental Health Specialist IV) provides lead direction in performing various county-wide environmental health inspection and enforcement activities, plans, coordinates and administers various day-to-day activities pertaining to the County's Cross Connection Control Program; coordinates, monitors and performs cross connection control activities, including the sanitary surveys of facilities where backflow prevention devices may be required; oversees the County's backflow prevention assembly database; investigates and identifies compliance issues; and communicates with program member water purveyors and regulatory agencies as required. In addition, the Cross Connection Control Specialist IV provides lead direction for County regulated small drinking water systems, and for monitoring of bacteria at beaches, creek mouths and other natural recreational waters within the County.

- Have and maintain certification as a Cross Connection Control Specialist from an appropriate accrediting agency

The Division of Environmental Health ensures a safe and healthful environment in the County's 20 cities and unincorporated areas through education, monitoring and enforcement of a variety of regulatory programs, as well as ongoing services to the community.
**NOTE**:The eligible list generated from this recruitment may be used to fill future extra-help, term, unclassified, and regular classified vacancies.

**Examples Of Duties**:
**Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following**:

- Investigate valves and fittings to determine cross-connection hazards; instruct consumers to install adequate backflow prevention devices; perform tests to be sure the devices are in proper working condition.
- Conduct surveys, collect and analyze data, including diagrams of cross connections, to verify compliance with state and local law.
- Notify the State Division of Drinking Water of corrective actions and compliance schedules as required by state law.
- Consult with, and explain cross connection control requirements, to property owners, managers, contractors, government agencies and the general public.
- Coordinate Cross Connection Control Program activities with City and County departments and outside agencies including the Planning and Building Departments and Fire Departments.
- Prepare and maintain records and files including field test data, surveys, cross connection locations, approved backflow assembly inventories, etc. Maintain a log of customer contacts and inspections.
- Compose correspondence, prepare forms and write reports relating to the Cross Connection Control Program, including enforcement actions as necessary.
- Oversee certified testers.
- Inspect and provide outreach and education to small drinking water systems (up to 14 service connections).
- Coordinate the sampling and reporting of weekly beach and creek mouth bacteria levels.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**:
**County Status**_: _**An applicant must have been a County of San Mateo employee in San Mateo County Health with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, Confidential and Management extra-help/limited term, SEIU or AFSCME represented extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date.
