**NATURE OF WORK**

The role of the City of Rockford, Community Outreach and Navigation Specialist is to walk alongside children and families, removing barriers as they seek collaborative healing services and programming collocated at the Community Healing Center (CHC) and externally with providers and systems throughout our community.

**GRANT FUNDING ADVISEMENT**:
This position is 100% funded by a grant from the United States Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). Grant funding for the current project period will end on September 30, 2025. Acceptance of this position shall not be construed as a guarantee of employment beyond the grant-funded period.

**DISTINGUISHING FEATURES**

The Community Outreach and Navigation Specialists will dedicate 100% of their time providing survivor-centered, trauma-informed support to children that have been exposed to violence and their families. The Navigators will provide services on behalf of the Strategies to Support Children Exposed to Violence Community Healing Center, located at the Boys and Girls Club Fairgrounds Unit.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (These essential duties are only illustrative.)**

Integrates into the community to bring awareness of and linkage to resources available at the CHC, as well as throughout the community, by establishing and attending neighborhood meetings and activities that bring residents together to work on shared ideas, issues of concern, new opportunities, and special projects to make their neighborhoods and homes free of domestic and community violence.

Conducts community outreach to educate residents on childhood exposure to violence and its effects, as well as supportive services, using a variety of methods including distributing brochures and pamphlets in neighborhoods, attending one-on-one meetings with key stakeholders and residents, door knocking, conducting remote meetings, focus groups, and listening sessions.

Builds authentic and trusting relationships with youth and their families who have experienced community violence, domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking, or child abuse, by performing intake procedures, undertaking assessments, monitoring progress, planning, advocating.

Provides high-quality practical and emotional support to children and families by linking them to educational supports, recreational opportunities, mental health services, mentorship, job skill development, housing, long term case management, and/or credible and relevant rehabilitation and support services.

Follows up with families to ensure all resource linkages are meaningful and complete, confirming the needs of the youth and family are met, placing a strong focus on providing assistance in the navigation of these complex systems to ensure individuals and families receive the support they need in to promote healing, address generational traumas, and receive linkage to crucial resources that promote equity.

Completes grant goals and objectives according to proposed timelines; working with the Project Manager to collect accurate data points throughout intake and services.

Adheres to trauma-informed and survivor driven principles and policies; treating all clients, staff, and partner agency personnel with kindness, dignity, empathy, and respect as they support and walk with children and families who are currently living with or have lived with, community and/or domestic abuse/violence.

Performs related duties as assigned or directed.

Maintains reasonable and predictable attendance.

**SUPERVISION RECEIVED**

Works under the overall supervision of the Children Exposed to Violence Project Manager, who reviews work for effectiveness, timeliness, and overall results achieved. Also, the Director of Boys and Girls Club Fairgrounds Unit will provide day-to-day supervision.

**WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS**

Work is performed in a variety of settings, including the CHC located at the Boys and Girls Club Fairgrounds Unit, and various public locations throughout the city of Rockford. Work activities occur in a fast-paced, high-demand environment, with flexible hours that depend on community needs.

Thorough knowledge of a public health approach to stop the cycles of violence in disproportionately impacted communities, including best practice intervention efforts and strategies.

Working knowledge of the legal system, local community services, and resources.

Comfortable working in a collaborative manner in a fast-paced environment with multiple organizations and flexible hours.

Sensitivity to the concerns of partner organizations, willingness to receive and use feedback in program design, interpersonal interactions, and policy development.

Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing, to conduct research, and to prepare clear and concise reports.
